I was wondering if anybody has removed their cassette player and installed something in its place (i.e. switches, guages, etc.). I will be installing some aux. backups and a rooftop warning light (for plowing snow) in the future and need somewhere to mount switches. This looks like a great spot and I never will need to play a tape.
So has anyone done this or have seen it done? Pictures? Instructions on how to mount some type of plate in there?

Shouldn't be hard and you won't cause any problems by removing the cassette player. Take it out and have a look. You could probably buy a pocket that would be used if you didn't have a cassette player. Perhaps the pocket would aid you in the switch mounting. The cassette player slides in on rails and there is a release clip on each side.

What about the blank spot just above the rear view mirror. Some (myself included) have installed the Edge Attitude in there. I have seen others mount two round gauges there. It is not that bad of a reach and if you have a lighted toggle or rocker it would be easily visible.

DmaxAllitech (Eric) has extra blank panels for the overhead console for sale on his website...they're cheap, too. That is, if you want to experiment with that.

Thanks for the replies.
I was planning on saving the overhead console area for the attitude controller when that is installed. I'm sure a couple more switches would fit, but I need a little more room than that (3-6, depends what type of warning lights are installed on the truck).
Diesel Power -- That looks great, exactly what I was looking for. What did you use? How exactly is it mounted?
