: ZF/6 gear noise

I am getting gear noise, seems like it's coming through the stick, starting at around 1500rpm's and up, in any gear. It did this about a year ago, I took it in, dealer did something (work order says tightened tower bolts), it has been fine up until about a week or so ago. Now it's back again. I took up the boot and tried to tighten the tower bolts, but they are all tight, so that's not it. My flywheel is gone, I know that, I am about to replace it, but I don't necessarily think the two are related. If they are, I'll know soon enough.

I am wondering if anyone else has/had this noise, knows how to fix, and/or know if this is something I should be concerned about or not. The service manual doesn't say much about it except that one can expect gear noise from the tranny. I'll have the tranny out of the truck in a little over a week replacing the flywheel and clutch and if there is anything I can do, that would be the time if you know what I mean.

Thanks,

Tim

is it two or four wheel drive? My 4X4 linkage was loose and it made noise thru the gear shift.

Sorry, I have an '02 crew cab 4x4 2500. Yeah, I have the manual transfer case lever too. I'll check that out, thanks for the info.

I've had to zip tie the front linkage under the truck as it connects to the Tcase lever. It rattles something fierce other wise. The only bad part is a shift into 4lo usually breaks the tie but they're cheap.

Try putting some heavy oil on the linkage conections too like 90 or 140 weight gear oil which resists wash out between than motor oil. (not 75w140 syn)

Thanks to all for telling me what the noise was, that was it indeed. I put a zip tie (good idea Jeli) on it to the piece of metal holding the fuel lines and it works like a champ.

Thanks,

Tim
