: New Suncoast III What to look for
blnagel 07-14-2004, 07:39 PM I am getting my Suncoast III in on Monday the 19th. Do I need to do anything special to this or is it okay to throw the power at it and also pull my 5er without any reservations? I am a little leary about too much thrown at it to quickly after spending over $3k. Maybe I am just a bit anal anyways. Any ideas/comments would be welcomed!

GMCSLEHD 07-14-2004, 08:01 PM I set the HJ on level 5 for the 4 hour trip home after my install and let'er have it ever since. I think you'll find the only time it's quirky is first thing in the morning (when cold), only needs a few sets of shifts to be redy to go, and when you change power levels on your programmer. Like Mac says, set it and forget it (I think he said that).http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

Maxter 07-14-2004, 08:27 PM GMCSLEHD: When you drive around all the time on Level 5 on the HJAT the tranny find it odd to only find 250hp instead of 400hp. As soon as the juice kicks in @ around 160 degrees, all is good again...
GMCSLEHD 07-14-2004, 08:54 PM Maxter,
I'm not sure if it's that, or the fact that the trans is still cold. When I leave to go to the shop in the morning, the first half mile I only get through about two or three sets of upshifts at 40mph max, and usually (mostly the 3-4 upshift) flares a little. The next 6-8 miles is 55-65mph with a few stoplights. Once the trans and motor see some heat, the shifts are perfect. So I'm not sure if it's the Ally not seeing full power right away, or the Ally being cold.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

blnagel 07-14-2004, 09:21 PM Pulling my 5er should not be a problem then? I am now thinking of these things since I actually bit the bullet for the Suncoast III> I can hardly wait to give it the juice then. Now I have had to back it down so my tranny wont slip.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif What a pain having to use a lower power level when you buy the thing for the big power.

GMCSLEHD 07-14-2004, 09:28 PM Ben,
I doubt the 5'er will be a problem. The landscape/mowing trailer I tow occasionally only weighs 5k, but the suncoast will handle it with the HJ at level 5 no problem. Tha triple disk is really nice for towing. I'm sure you'll be impressed.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

blnagel 07-14-2004, 09:33 PM What I mean is would it be a concern initially or should I wait for a "break-in" period.

dmaxalliTech 07-14-2004, 11:06 PM Once the adapts settle down, lock it and rock ithttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif
Diesel Tech 07-14-2004, 11:15 PM As with any clutch replacement it would be wise to take it easy for a few miles and allow the clutches to seat and the transmission to learn. It's kind of like baking a cake, heat them up slow and allow to cook all the way without burning. I recommend to run it around and get up to normal operating temps, then do a couple WOT runs in level 3 on the juice. Cruise it around for a few miles then park it and allow it to cool completely. This allows everything to seat up and have a cool down cycle. After that have at it.
blnagel 07-14-2004, 11:31 PM My drive home will be 140 miles or should I drive around that town for a bit and then let her cool down? I was thinking that might be a good break in time. All interstate and going 75mph. I am soooooo pumped to get this tranny upgrade. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Maxter 07-15-2004, 12:49 AM GMCSLEHD: We may not be describing the same thing but when everything is hot (tranny + engine) if I go from level 5 to level 0 I get the same behavior from the tranny as if I drive on level 5 all the time and start it up cold the next morning with the juice inactive on a cold engine.
GMCSLEHD 07-15-2004, 08:43 AM Maxter,
We're on the same page, mine will do the same.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Mike L. 07-15-2004, 04:54 PM Remember guys, the TCM is learning nothing at highway speeds, so if you get the Ally fixed and drive home a bunch of miles, you have done nothing for relearn. You do it when you get home in stop and go.

GMCSLEHD 07-15-2004, 05:00 PM Mike,
Yup, took aseveral trips out on the country roads to get it learnt well.

blnagel 07-15-2004, 05:11 PM Is it okay to go on hi-way then stop n go driving or should I do it the other way around? I dont want to mess this big investment up by not doing the right thing. Mike L you know your sh*t. imho

Mike L. 07-15-2004, 06:31 PM Ben
Just drive it home and don't worry, you won't hurt anything. I have had many guys come in from out of town, get the work done and head home from the shop. I do suggest doing what DieselTech said. If you had limps prior to the Suncoast install, some of your adapt cells (relearn memory) may be stuck on the high pressure side and bang on a certain shift. It might take forever to relearn that shift without a scan tool. If you haven't limped it and your shifts are acceptable or almost, it will fix itself. Enjoy, and Git er Done. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

blnagel 07-15-2004, 07:23 PM Thanx alot Mike. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated. I wont worry now. Hopefully the guy doing the install can clear those codes for me since my tranny has slipped several times in the past. I can hardly wait until Monday for the install.

emerick115 07-19-2004, 08:27 AM How much atf do you need to refill the tranny after a suncoast stage III install?
Mackin 07-19-2004, 09:10 AM I'd have a Min of 5 gallons available.
Mac
blnagel 07-19-2004, 09:40 AM I am off to see the wizard! C ya!
Ben http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif
blnagel 07-20-2004, 08:44 PM My clutches were not too bad. For never seeing some before in person but definately there were some hot points seen. I had to leave before my truck was done so I will pick it up tomorrow! I will keep you posted.
Ben http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif
Mike L. 07-20-2004, 10:27 PM I can't wait till this is over. I feel as nervous as a prostitute at prayer meeting. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
mikehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
ratlover 07-21-2004, 08:46 AM I'd have 6 minimum......I think I bought 24 quarts and used em all anywayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
I also drained the transfer case witch is another 2. Its not necissary to dran it but its kinda a bit more of a PITA.
I will say the after my install I started to wonder if somehow SC added another gear and forgot to tell me, man you can feel that converter lockhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
blnagel 07-22-2004, 10:56 AM New Suncoast III is in and I like it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif. I can definately tell the firmer shifts too. As above, once it warms up the shifts are nice. It was worth the wait. As someone said earlier, it only hurts for a little while.
Ben http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif
blnagel 07-23-2004, 08:47 PM My concern is this, is it normal for it to be slow to engage from a stopped position? I run on level 4 of the xcellerator. It takes 1-2 seconds to engage then it does okay. I notice alot more from reverse to drive. HMMMM.

GMC-2002-Dmax 07-23-2004, 08:58 PM Check your fluid level hot
Thttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gifNY
blnagel 07-23-2004, 09:01 PM Could it be low then?
Ben
GMC-2002-Dmax 07-23-2004, 09:16 PM That's where I would start..........
Slow engagement is usually indictated by a lack of proper fluid level.......
Since I am not a Tranny Guru, someone else may chime in........
PM Mike L or smoop..........they can help you more than I.
Thttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifNY
blnagel 07-23-2004, 09:17 PM Thanx alot
Ben
blnagel 07-23-2004, 09:31 PM My levels are full, possibly a bit too full. My temps are where they were before the upgrade too. They added 24 quarts of fluid after the upgrade too.
Ben http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
blnagel 07-24-2004, 02:41 PM Talked with Mike today and after much discussion he feels that all this is related to my xcellerator. I tried levels 1-3 without any problems and in level 4 it happens frequently. Then I told him about my SES code 0234 and that being a boost issue, he concluded that my problem is the xcellerator. I will take it back to where I bought the thing and tell them I want the hot juice!!!!!!!!!!!
