: Help please!! - injector troubles

Hi everybody, i'm new to this (great) site so this is my first post. I have a 2002 Silverado 3500 Crewcab DRW w/duramax/allison - 33,400mi.(also, I have been an ASE Certified Master Auto Tech for 20+ yrs so the information/advise i'm looking for is more 'experience' in nature than technical)

So here it goes,

After having most of the symptoms of faulty injectors, the dealer confirmed the problem, scheduled the fix, & 3 weeks later returned the vehicle to me. Well, on the ride home, upon accelerating on the highway I noticed the vehicle was leaving a monster cloud of black smoke behind & getting about 6mpg. Once home, I looked closer at the repair order & was surprised to see a "Re-manufactured injector set" listed as the parts installed. Now I know they had difficulties locating injectors (hence the 3 week wait), but after speaking with the assistant service mngr, & chevrolet customer service, I was informed that this is the standard fix. Now my question is - has anyone else out there had re-man.parts/injectors installed for this warrantied repair? I have a HUGE problem with chevy supplying re-manufactered parts for what amounts to a "new" vehicle repair (still under factory 3yr-36k warranty). I am scheduled to return the truck for this (smoke & mpg) & another on-going trans problem. However, after insisting on no re-man parts (ie-injectors), I was told that this is GM's only fix, & would really like to know if anyone else has experienced this. After reading some posts here about first, second, &third generation Bosch Injectors, I'm having my doubts & seriously considering another dealership. Thanks in advance for any help & information anyone can provide.

You will probably find that this will be a common practice with these injectors.

Bosch/GM are replacing the defective mechanical parts and reusing the Solenoid (electrical) and calling the re manufactured.

I'd be semi disgruntle but happy if it was a solid corrective action.

Let us know if you will on your resolve of your problem.

TIA and Welcome to The DieselPlace

Let me Welcome a fellow ASE tech as well.....

As far as your questions though...

The injectors are only labeled as remans, this is so that they may collect a core charge on them, ensuring that they get the old injectors back and may get them to Bosch for evaluation. According to one of the Dmax Brand Quality Mgrs, its only the labeling. THe injectors are indeed new and never before used. I suspect that once they get a handle on these, they may start a reman process, but the risk of getting a faulty injector part back into the supply chain is just to risky at this time.

So.. you do have NEW injectors, but the other issue sounds like a dealer issue, not a part issue....

Thanks all for your replies, they were very helpful, especially the post from 'dmaxalliTech'

Boy was I ever wrong with that statement, twenty+ years of bustin' knuckles/twistin' wrenches & me more than anyone should know that your never too smart/good to learn something from someone else. Sorry if I came off pompous. I found a little more time to cruise this site & man, there sure is a lot of really good advise/posts here. I'm not sure how much more I could contribute over some of the pros you already have here, but i'll try where i can.

Thanks again everybody..

**dmaxalliTech (or anyone else)-your thoughts please-in regards to the on-going trans problem, originally, after parking on incline overnite trans wouldn't engage, dealer stated no problem,no problem,no problem. Finally I stuck my professional .02 in & stated with any other vehicle, it would be a faulty check valve in the front pump slowly bleeding off the torque convertor (ie-overnite), but that i wasn't familiar with the allison. Well, one week after that comment & it was fixed by a "remove pump & modify" repair (requiring R&R trans). Since then though, at hi-way speeds, after dropping into "passing gear", trans will not up-shift again (out of passing gear) until acceleration is ceased!! (foot off fuel pedal) & again dealer states-no problem,no prblem,no problem. For most vehicles incorrect fluid pressure would be my first suspect (ie-pump!), however, i am not that familiar with allisons (how much different could they be?) & wouldn't want to jump to conclusions (but I'm afraid if I don't make another 'comment', it will not be repaired properly)-any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

It could just be the Allison having to relearn after the repair. This tranny does seem to have a mind of its own sometimes and will act differently at different times. Just a thought.

To clarify, you did or didnt have the pump modification done?

If you did and problem is new, they did something during the repair. If you didnt, I wouldnt worry about it, that particular problem only effects trucks that sit usually for a week or more before demonstrating that condition. Overnight is not long enough and I highly doubt the pump spring changes will repair it.

I echo your comment on your never too smart to pick something up.. we have hourly guys here that even teach me a thing or two once and a while, how to shave a few minutes off a particular job or whatever..

Your not pompous, you just want your truck fixed, and we will get it done....eventuallyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

No more than 24hrs on an incline (my driveway) & she was a no-go.

The dealer stated they "remove & modify pump" to effect this repair (which i assume was done as the problem is gone)

Additional "shifting" problem occured after the pump fix was done (& seems to be getting progressively worse)

I'm going to cruise the "allison" section at this site to try & learn more, but any help/advise here would be appriciated also.

Thanks again in advance...

Make sure you insist on them fixing the transmission not shifting back in to overdrive after a down shift as this is not normal. And if you let it go your transmission warranty will be up before you know it (3 year & or 36,000 miles)

Also, were you able to get the low mpg and smoke cleared up? (pun intendedhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif)
