I was curious to know the results with the different brands. Anyone recall a before and after EGT on their system @ a couple operating parameters. I know this is a broad question and hard to compare but maybe with enough data we can see some sort of a trend. I hope this doesn't turn into a pi$$ing match. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

You'll see a solid drop with most any system, BUT as you stated, this is pretty togh to verify.

Truth is, unless someone really screws up the design of the system, most all 4" systems with a free flowing muffler should perform very similarly. From there it boils down to sound, fit, and general quality...

Kinda figured they would differ somewhat but I guess if they are close enough on EGT's that should remove one element from the decision. Makes things easier to concentrate on sound and quality.

Mine dropped a bit but can't give you the correct amount. Same load (4000 lb boat) same hill, out side temp close to same. I am sure there is better but I didn't want a lot of noise. If I were to guess it would be close to 100 degrees Flowmaster

Is that a complete 4' Flowmaster system or just the muffler?

Thanks

Complete system from down pipe back-is 4" and has 5" stainless tip. Easy install- mellow sound.

abear, I saw solid and substantial reductions when I cut out the factory oval muffler and spliced a 4" straight-through Magnaflow into the factory pipes. I had installed my guages prior to the muffler swap and my egts went down 100 to 150 degrees "across the board." The OEM muffler is really restictive!

Idle, Was it much trouble to splice in the 4" muffler? How's the sound through the RPM range?

Not too much trouble. I did it on the ground in a driveway in Maryland in December. I cut the factory muffler out with a chain cutter as close to the muffler as possible. Then I dropped the front pipe and swiveled out the tailpipe. The Magnaflow went in with two 3-1/2x4 adapters and 4" band clamps. After fitting it all up, I tack welded the adapters to the factory pipes, removed the clamps, took out the pipes and muffler and welded the adapters to the pipes. Then it all went back in with the band clamps. Noise is louder, but not objectionable. There is a drone at 1500 rpm - but just at 1500 rpm and drops right off either side. Pictures are in my link.

A Bear, I installed the 4" muffler from DPPI in my 3.5" exhaust pipe. Even making my own "orange peel" adapter the total time spent was about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. EGTs dropped from 125 to 200 degrees, depending on RPM and load. (pre and post tests were as accurate and repeatable as I could make them by myself) I got what I wanted for the drop in EGTs. The in the cab noise increased enough for city stop&go driving to want me to install a resonator, but the trip to San Diego and back this weekend proved that the muffler noises were not above normal Highway noise. Overall Satisfaction, but enough city driving to make me get a resonator.

a bear,

Any decent system will get you nearly the same EGT degree drop, unlkess it's a poorly designed muffler that is. You should see 100-140 degree drop on a stock truck and up to 200 degrees on a truck that is reall modded up, especially when towing. What you ned to shop for is the quality of the system design and manufacture, the ease of installation and of course warranty back up and customer service too. We ONLY do diesel no gas so were a little more tuned into what diesel customers want and spend all of our days on only diesel issues etc. Take a look at our site to see what we have to offer, aluminized, T-409 , T-304 single and duals with and without tips etc etc. Call me if you have any questions etc.
