What's the best way to nip a little surface rust before it gets worse. I have a couple of dime sized spots...one over the front passenger side window and a couple of spots on the lower edge of the rear door of a suburban.

Does any of that stuff that you can spray on that turns the rust into a primer really work?

Only way to stop rust is to take it down to clean metal, reprime and paint. Topical treatment may slow it down but won't stop it. If a easy topical application that stopped existing rust cold was available the Navy would have it. They don't.
