You'll probably need more than just the bezel to fit a Double din in your dash correctly, as the radio space in the pre-03 trucks is din-1/2 size.

i have heat gun and dremel....i am sure that will get it in the dash....but not sure if that will make it look good.......:grd:

i am sure that i wont be the first to attempt to fit double din into a din and half

You could find the radio frame module of a 03-up dash and install that in place....then all you'd have to figure out is how to mount the HVAC controls (which may just be drilling a couple new holes)...

I've got to take my radio out this weekend so I can test another one. I'll take some pics. Can you wait that long?

gettin pictures this weekend would be great ......even better if the pics are with and without the bezel in place...need to figure out how much the conversion is gonna take.....

OK. I happen to have an 02 bezel in my garage so I'll take the radio out and put the two bezels on so you can see the difference.

I'll try to take some decent pics of the dash frame module, too...

Heres the pics I promised. The dash bezels go in and fit exactly the same. The vent holes and cubby holes all line up. So that part is easy.

I had an 02 auto climate control head in the garage, so I compared them, too. They mount exactly the same, and the mounts are identical, BUT the 02 head is about 1/2" wider than the 03-up head. It would be a bear to cut that area out of the 03 dash module, as you'd have to slice into both sides to keep the control head centered. I also think it would destroy the dash module if you tried this.

The 03 radio/HVAC area is completely open, so I guess you would have an easier time cutting the 01 dash for the double-din radio than installing the 03-up dash module. I do not know if there are the flat areas for the radio bracket mounting in the 01, though, since the earlier radios used the slides to mount. The 03 radio mounts in the module using screws into the three gold speed nuts in the last pic.

Pic descriptions are from left to right

03-up trim/02 trim installed/HVAC controls sidebyside/comparing HVAC widths/dash radio module/HVAC portion/radio portion

I hope this helps you.

thanks tons for the pics......alot of help....looking at he pics....is the heater controls of the 02 and 03 difference in height as well as lenght (side to side) ?.....i think it is one of the things i am gonna have to get an 03 bezel to find out for sure.......wish i knew of someone close to check fit of parts.......looks like the double din head unit will fit in my dash ( it has the 3 screw mounts as yours)....the problems will arise with the heater control unit......wondering if the 03 unit will plug and play in my 01 dash......then i would just have to get the control unit and bezel....could i really get that lucky ???

The 03 control head won't work with the older HVAC systems.
The 03 heater control is slightly taller, but if you look close, all the extra height is taken up at the bottom of it....if I had gotten the mounts exactly even, the tops of the control heads line right up. The bezel opening in the 03 is slightly larger. I can take it back out and put the 02 control head behind it to see how much. You may have to add a thin filler below the control head to "clean" it up.

Isn't there just a piece of fiberglass in between the radio and the HVAC controls on the 01? Sort of like a shelf?
Maybe all you'd have to do is cut that out, mount the radio using the three holes (now isnt that convenient?), and use the 03-up bezel.

Can you put up a pic of your radio area, so I can see the differences? Also, I think Bobo, smudge and all those guys live in that area. Maybe even Ratlover does? Send them a PM and ask if you can take a look at their trucks...

Boy, I just dont know how that would work. It doesn't look like there's any meat on the sides of the radio area for a conventional screwed-in mounting. Is there a retrofit kit available through your local audio installer?

i am thinking that i can get a 03 radio/heater control box and mount it in my dash.....that would make the right mount for double din radio....mount my heater control in place and use heat gun on the 03 bezel to give a little more room side to side and try to close up any gap top to bottom.....i am optmistic....need to find an 03 in junk yard....any idea of which bezel and radio box will work.......as in years and makes.....thinking yucon would be same ?

TheBac

oh yeah, any 03-up GM truck dash would be the same.

ok well now that i know i can put the double din in the dash.....was looking for navigation and prices.......i am shocked at the cost of adding navagation to a dvd player.....lol......now i am rethinking my idea of putting it in there....i am sure this is on the verge of getting put in electronics now....i just cant see spending $800 on dvd player and then another $800 on navagation and that dont even count the work and parts to get in into my dash on the 01 ?? :help2: :badidea: :(

Why not just get a GM Touchscreen, a video adapter, and a slave DVD player? On Ebay, you might spend $750 for the TNR, $199 for the adapter, and another $200 for the DVD player.

I was also giving some thought to the mounting problem. You'd have to space out the area around that upper left speed nut forward so it was "even" with the rest of the area.
Then you'd have to figure out a way to adapt "L" shaped mounts to the lower left and the middle right of the opening.
All this is predicated on you test fitting a double din radio in there first, and checking fit side-to-side and front-to-back. You may have clearance issues in the lower rear.

Maybe using a combination of 2001 and 2003-up aftermarket radio mounting kits may have the parts to do this?

Tom he has a 2001 truck ;)

GM OEM nav unit wont work in 2001-2002 trucks.

as for double din it can be done with alot of glassing and cutting

but using the 03 controls requires lots of wiring and is about impossible to do without a complete donar truck
