Well I did her in today.

Took a guy out for a spin. Did a little power brake which was ok let off at about 30 mph. Got back into it and i could hear it shift, 3rd, 4th, 5th but truck wasn't really moving. Slowed to a stop, same thing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th but truck only moved a bit.

So, I went back to my shop, disconnected the battery cables for 10 minutes. Reconnected and went for a drive. Everything was ok more or less, but check engine light was on. I called my dealership to see about warranty (I know, I know) because I am thinking of trading off and don't want to spend 5k for the next guy. (You have to pay to play, I know) They said, should be no problem. Since it was after 5 I asked if the service manager who is kind of a friend of mine would stay late so we could read the codes. Well I made the 30 mile trip there with no problems. I even had to slow down for a corner, pass some people etc, no problems. Until, I got into town. I had to stop at a light and make a left turn. I got through the corner and then things seem to slip and it stayed in 3rd (might have been 2nd as it seemed to not go very fast). Only 1/2 a block to go so I limped in.

So we read the codes. P0700, P0732, P0776. History codes were U1000, U1016, U1064, U1301. This is the first time my truck has been back to the dealership since the day I drove it home. He reset the codes and I went home.

All seemed fine for the first 15 miles. Then I had to stop at a stop sign and make another right back on the highway. When I got on the highway, i got to 3rd and it didn't want to shift back to 4th. So I let off, put it in neutral and back to D. Then it shifted to 4th, 5th fine. and I was on my way back home for the remainder of the 15 miles. When I got back to town, I slowed down, turned the corner, then it was back to slipping and doing weird things. Ever since then I can't get it to work right.

I took it to my shop and changed the spin on filter just in case. No effect. Back it out of the shop, go for a drive, things are only getting worse.

As it sits now, no R, only 3rd. It also says on the DIC Range shift inhibited now. It didn't do this until I changed the filter (I know, not related but thats the time line)

Is there any chance that it is the NSBU switch?

Here's my problem. I WAS planning on going camping for the next 3 weekends. As it stands, there is no way I can do it now. I know my dealer will have my truck for at least 2 weeks if I decide to do it under warranty. I don't really have the money or time to do a Suncoast Level 3 right now. If I keep my truck, I plan on doing the upgrade anyways. But I might not keep my truck. I might get an 04 LLY. This would also be my quickest way to getting back on the road.

I just wish I could get another 3 weeks out of it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Sounds like your planning on a tranny upgrade before your camping trip

Max Power

So what is going on in there now?

I know I was abusing it. I know I had too much power going through it. But I really thought it would hold up a bit longer then it did. I am pretty sure a lot of people here were running a lot more power then I was and seemed to get more out of it. I have never stacked. Oh well. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifEdited by: Max Power

Ouch man, very sorry to hear about that. Guess you either get it fixed or buy a new truck..

Check a local wreckers yard for a used tranny. Several around here with motors and front driveline for a very decent price. Just a thought and a cheap option. Or opt for a tranny upgrade now, and then really pound on herhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

Nope no NSBU for you ....

Sounds like you have cooked C1 .Made bellvue washers of your steels. That is why you just countinue to limp the tranny as that is what you describe no "R" third gear only .

Good luck Get ER Done .

Feel like getting dirty? Buy the Transgo kit and some clutches and set aside a weekend and go for it. Hopefully the converter is ok.

I personally would just bite the bullet and do the Suncoast or ATS now. It will only hurt for a little while. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Or...talk the dealer into a different truck as a rental while yours is being worked on.

Oh yeah, thats another twist. My dealership doesn't have a tranny guy right now. So they are going to give the job to their other dealership who is not quite as easy to get along with. While they say that getting it rebuild back to stock isn't a problem, anything 'extra' might be. I won't know more until tomorrow. I already said I don't mind paying for the extra parts (suncoast level 3). So basically all I would get is free labor. But then I don't know how good this tranny guy is. Perhaps I would be better to do it myself? But I really don't have any experience. The only thing I don't have is a tranny jack which I am sure i can borrow. Decisions, decisions. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

You can do it! Get a couple of buddies/volunteers for the R & R and go for it!

Mack or Joe Webb will talk you through it! Mack can disassemble and reassemble an Allison in his sleep. Plus he can have one on the ground in 45 minutes, If I remember correctly from previous postings.

I prefer the Mike L. teachings but that's a whole different set of posts. The Transgo book would certainly be helpful in this situation.

And of course I would be remiss if I participated in a transmission thread without mentioning ATS. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

I understand they now offer C-4 clutches in their kit. How far are you from Colorado? Don't tell Mac I said ATS ok? He doesn't like electronic thing-a- majigs controlling his transmission unless GM put it there. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I let it sit overnight and drove it to work this morning. I took it real easy. Shifted normal, reverse and everything. I know I still need to have it fixed but it sure is weird.

I'd trade it in on a LLY, and be done, If they will give you a good trade price, and If they can get the truck that you want in a short time frame. Then get all the "5th wheel extras" changed over to the new truck and go camping...

Just buy another one that way when your injectiors go out you will still have a truck to drive.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I wouldn't chance hooking up the fifth wheel. You might get away with driving it completely stock.

Divorce the Edge for now till your ready, give it a shot.

OK Mike, I'm going to do the shooting! A focus?!?!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif Now I expect that trans book asap!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif After flying out of one off of a freeway overpass (rolled it 6 times first), that's the last car, correction, that's one car I'll never get in again!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif

Max, have Mike overnight the book and do the Suncoast! The more I read about guys dong it themselves with the help and support from this forum has convinced me that when it's time, I'm going to do it. Of course, I believe Mike is within a 2 hour drive if it hits the fan!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Wheewww-doggy! Good job. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif So the dealer took your truck with the worn transmission? Guess they'll do a warranty repair....no problem for them.

How do you like the LLY? Maybe too soon to tell but shouldn't be much different - should it? Hope you got the good interest rate you talked about.

Any plans to Suncoast the '04 right away as a form of preventative maintenance? I'm interested and not too far from Eric's place. Enjoy the camping trip....

I have a post of first impressions in the LLY forum. If you can't find it, let me know and I will post a link.

Yep dealer took it on trade knowing full well what caused it and they have no problem fixing under warranty.

I plan on doing a shift kit and torque coverter asap and if needed a level 3 later on. If they LLY never makes enough power to blow through the stock clutches then I have nothing to worry about. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
