: First Oil Change
Reluctantly because I never did one on a Cummins... at 7300 miles I relented.
Oil drained in about 2 minutes out a sweet 3/8 square drive plug.
I had the old filter out in about another 5 minutes, only dripped like two drops, The vertical filter is awesome and doesn't spill at all if you are careful. I used my cheapy Pennzoil http://home.comcast.net/~hoot74/dodge/oil/oilfilterwrench/images/DSCN5284.jpg
filter wrench. Worked like a charm. It looks tight (spacewise) but in the end its faster and easier and cleaner than any truck I ever owned.
3 gallons came out. 3 gallons went back in. Used no oil in it's first 7300 miles of life. Prefilling the new filter gave me instant oil pressure.Edited by: Diesel Power
captainmal 07-13-2004, 11:24 PM WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF EASY SERVICE. When you do your fuel filter expect a similar experience.
7,000 miles on my oil and I checked it today. Down about an 1/8th inch. That included hauling a trailer to California from Pa. Taking a trailer to Detroit tomorrow. No need to change oil. I feel unwanted ....boo hoo hoohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif !
Dodge-5.9 07-14-2004, 04:52 AM i have a 99 cummins how many miles should i go before i change my oil? i usually change it every 5,000 and it has 98,000 miles on it
You should be good at 7500 miles. Three gallons goes a long way. My trucks recommendation is 15,000 miles between changes. I prefer 7500 personally. The reason for the long intervals on the third gen trucks is the lack of EGR or other contaminant creating add-ons and the precision of the common rail fuel system.
Ray403Dmax 07-14-2004, 05:20 PM Might be a good idea to do the first couple of oil changes earlier than 7500 miles, just to clean out the silicon.

I agree.... just lazy

Won't hurt but gets a little expensive.

captainmal 07-15-2004, 09:24 PM Hoot,
You just never let up.
GOOD!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
Just dumped another 900 miles on today. Erie tomorrow, Ontario Sunday (maybe),South Carolina next week, then New Jersey (maybe), Ohio and Florida all in the next two weeks.
Cummins on strong.
Blue Max 07-15-2004, 10:25 PM Those Cummins are so good I wouldn't think you would ever have to change the oil or filters. I herd they can drive on water.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

That'll teach the GM boys for coming into our space just to make "cheap" Dodge comments http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

precision37 07-23-2004, 03:58 PM Do I detect a little " new brand loyalty" sarcasm creaping into Hoot's posts? Hey, if your truck runs well and you enjoy it, thats all that counts. It doesn't matter who made it. All of the big three make some good products, but none of them are perfect. Buy what you like and drive it till you find something better.
We pretty much all have some loyalty to the $30,000+ decisions we make. The sarcasm is just kneejerk
