: Oil Capacity
mgraham 07-13-2004, 06:28 PM Why is it that nobody knows how much oil goes in my duramax? The chevrolet website states that it is only 6.0 quarts. The dealership told me that it is between 12 and 15 quarts. And the Autozone people told me that it is 10 with the filter. What the heck is the deal. I dont know why the website would say only 6.0 quarts, can someone enlighten me? I put 6 in there and the dipstick was dry.
help
PA24Pilot 07-13-2004, 06:42 PM 10 quarts is your oil capacity.

SteveNorCal 07-13-2004, 08:02 PM mgraham,
You've found the right place for the right info!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif 10 qts. it is, which includes the filter.
motocopter 07-13-2004, 10:49 PM Tomorrow I'll perform my 15K mile service and oil change. Seems to me I putting in a touch over 10 quarts in order to get the oil level up to the full line on the dipstick.
NWDmax 07-13-2004, 11:52 PM 10 for me with filter puts it at 1/8" over the full mark.
I would go with the 10 and wherever that puts you is your new full mark.

3500LLY 07-14-2004, 12:20 AM is there a difference between LB7 and LLY cause mine holds 11 quarts
Idle_Chatter 07-14-2004, 07:38 AM I've got the Amsoil dual remote, so it's just over 10 qts with a full-flow filter change and right at 12 qts with both filters replaced in mine.
CStone 07-14-2004, 08:22 AM "The dealership told me that it is between 12 and 15 quarts. "
mgraham: I would DEFINITELY not take my DMax to that dealership for any sort of service whatsoever.
Blue Max 07-14-2004, 02:44 PM Yea, they probably think the windshield wiper fluid tank holds 26 gallons.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Leave now while you still can, If you hang out around here you'll be buying Sh*t for your truck you didn't know existed that you really don't need, that now you can't live with out. You'll have withdrawls if you cant get to a computer to check the "Active Topics" IT'S NOT WORTH IT DON'T LOOK BACK.... Damn It's too late I see you now have 2 posts, your hooked...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif
Custom Home Builder 07-16-2004, 11:29 PM i run 3 1 gallon bottels in mine every time and never have any problems. I run 1 gallon of lucas oil treatment and 2 gallons of lucas synthetic rotella t high grade diesel oil what is the best oil out there. May be we should do an oil test now, to see witch of them is the best for our trucks. what is the favorit oil for you guys around here?
TClark 07-18-2004, 08:39 AM try checking the deisel part of your owners manual. Under "CAPACITIES".
Mine says 10 quarts, which it is. :)
Silveradogs 07-18-2004, 10:14 PM Same with mine. Overfill the crankcase, and your rods and journals will dip in the oil, frothing it to the texture of a mousse eventually.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
If only folks would open that book that came with their trucks, and i don't mean the payment book....
Chevysrus 07-20-2004, 02:49 PM Well, actually it all depends on how level the truck is when you drain the oil and how long you let it drain before you put the plug back in.
I have put 11 qts in my '01 LBJ-7 (I liked LBJ so I renamed the engine LOL) since the first change I did on it.
I always change my oil with the truck on about a 20-25 degree incline and let it drain/drip about 30 minutes while I grease it and chnage the tranny spin on. I believe I am getting about 1 quart out of that front sump in the pan by changing on the incline and letting it drip a while. If the truck is level I don't think you can get any of the old oil out of that front sump area in the pan. Wish they had a drain plug up there as that has to be where all the crud is building up if you can't drain it all.
Anyway, 11 qts, brings mine exactly up to the top of the in range mark on the dip stick with the truck back on level ground.
So 10 quarts is the official capacity, but that simply puts you "in range" on the dipstick. If you want to be full it might take more to get there. For me it's 11 qts every time and it is not over full on the dipstick.
Also Mobil Delvac 1 is my preference and don't get your oil filters at the dealer....Autozone now carries the Delco OEM oil filter for a whole lot less.
Good Luck.
I bet that 12-15 qts dealer was thinking about capacity with a new pan, completely dry....what does that front sump area hold anyway, looks like its 2-3 qts maybe?
