I have a question for all you 2500HD owners... What is the max slide-in camper (or payload) weight listed on the sticker in your glove boxes? When you reply please include the major specs of your truck (Reg/Ext/CC cab, engine, transmission, 4x4) as well.

Thanks!

Thanks guys, great info. I'm trying to figure out the algorithm GM uses to dertermine the actual rating -- or at least a reasonably close estimation.

I have my sights set on a 2500HD or an '04 3500 SRW to haul a light to "medium" weight slide-in camper and I know there is a lot of bullsh, errr, make that voodoo, between the payload specifications in the brochure and the actual payload rating when it rolls off the assembly line.

I know a DRW will be more than sufficient but the rear end is too wide for my tastes.

I think GM is pretty close in keeping with the advertised GVWR with the #'s on the glove box sticker. My truck weighs about 6800 pounds full of gas, me, and junk. Add 1,970 pounds of bed cargo and a couple more people and I'm at advertised GVWR.

Have I hauled more? A LOT. Is it safe? I think as long as I don't overload the tires-yes.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

That would make sense since I have one of the lighter configurations, manual tranny and regular cab, I bet a 2wd could hold even more.

Well, after ruminating and rooting around and having some real-life weights from you guys to compare to I think I have a basis on which to figure out actual payload and camper ratings:

First, You need the base vehicle payload rating and the engine and transmission weights.

Approximate engine and transmission weights (lbs.)

DMax - 836, 8.1L - 734, 6.0L - 450

Allison - 350, ZF6 - 240, 4L80E - 254, NV4500 - 200
[/list]

The base 2500HD and 3500 series trucks come with the 6.0L and NV4500 so you'll have to add those weights back to the base payload rating then subtract the weights of the engine and transmission you actually have.

Next, you need the magic number '150' which I read somewhere is GM's "average" weight for each passenger. Include all passengers that can occupy the cab (2 or 3 for the reg cab, 5 or 6 for the ext and crew cabs). The camper rating assumes you have a cab full of 150-lb people (or 1 driver and 4 great danes).

I'll leave the arithmetic to you as an exercise but it all works out reasonably well, within a 150 lbs or so. I just wish GM included the engine and transmission weights with their specification table so one could get an estimate that is somewhere in the ballpark.

Wicked: Offhand, I don't know what the 2500HD RAWR rating is but the 2500HD,RegCab,2wd,6.0L,NV4500 payload is 4047 lbs. If someone were to go with that config, the RAWR might be more of a factor than than the GVWR. If I had a camper that heavy I think I'd rather have a dually instead.

Thanks again guys!
