: 2 months old and 8 trips to the Service Dept
groten 07-12-2004, 09:48 PM I have been having chronic problems with engine hesistation and loss of power when towing my 12,000# fifth-wheel RV. The truck has been to the dealer 8 times in 2 months. The dealer is in the process of replacing the truck (not buying it back). Is anyone having these types of issues? I am concerned about getting a replacement Chevy. I currently have a 2004 2500HD, LLY Dmax, Allison, 4x4 with 4,200 miles. Here is the history of the truck to date.
How's this for a new truck:
1) Delivered on May 5th, 2004
2) EGR replaced on May 18th
3) Oil Leak on June 1st
4) Turbo replaced on June 1st
5) Driver door check strap replaced on June 15th
6) Catalytc converter replaced on June 29th.
7) Back at the dealer, with loss of power issue while towing on July 1st.
8) Turbo boost sensor replaced on July 1st
9) Engine still experiencing loss of power while towing.
Any ideas what's next? Has anyone else had these issues?Edited by: groten
pistol82 07-12-2004, 10:40 PM I am not satisfied with my '04 2500HD Chevy 4 door.
I have had it in service three times since purchase.
Here's what I have experienced.
New A/C Compressor
New CD/Stereo
I am getting terrible fuel economy, I get 9.9 to 10 miles per gallon pulling a 2500# enclosed aluminum motocycle trailer at speeds of 65mph.
I am getting on average about 12.2 miles per city driving and highway with speeds not exceeding 65mph.
The truck has about 5000 miles on it.
Anyone else having this kind of fuel economy?
patrick 07-14-2004, 12:20 AM all signs of the lly and being new....sounds like the service tech is having problems with diag.as far as the engine issue. gm radios are junk I have replaced so many of them.door check straps are common.I feel the egr turbo loss of power and boost sensor oil leak may all be related. now loss of power may be injector issues. what was wrong with the turbo....see my post a few months back on the turbo I replaced with 800 miles...pm me if you need advise. specialtyautosd 07-17-2004, 12:49 PM I know a guy who is very dissapointed with his, he would take his old one back anyday. 7-9 mpg pulling hard and less power than his old one. He pulls and enclosed race trailer. It is at the dealer i dont know if he is going to get his old one back or find the problem with the new one. When I find out I will try to let you know TROY
hdmax 07-17-2004, 09:36 PM I would not be happy with a trade in, I would insist on a buy back, if after 8 visits they have not gotten it right.
And do not rule out buying a Ford or Dodge if you are unhappy with a GM. They all three make great trucks, as well as junk at times.
RickDLance 07-17-2004, 09:52 PM I am also having problems with my 2004.5 LLY. Poor fuel mileage, low power, and overheating. I have filed a lemon law case and waiting for GM, who by the way admits they have a problem with my truck, but don't know how to fix it.
groten 07-20-2004, 10:50 PM It's over.....
GM called me on 07/16/04 to inform me that they would buy the truck back. Meawhile they installed another EGR and an ECM. The DMax engineering team confirmed on Monday that there are wide-spread issues with the EGRs in the LLY DMax. My biggest concern now is that they are going to screw me on the refund price! They are trying to tell me that they won't refund the sales tax and they will charge me 0.1825 per mile for the miles I drove the truck. However the Tennesse Lemon says they must refund everything including the sales tax.
I can't decide whether to buy a Dodge or a Ford.
robby 07-21-2004, 03:11 AM they are in the process of buying mine back. the build date of the truck is 4/04 the delivered date was 5/13 mine has front end problems the truck has 896 miles on it was in 4 times. just ordered 05 tonight .waiting for all my money to be refeunded truck was stuck in flint on hold 04 gmc
stewcon 07-21-2004, 08:18 PM I am looking for a new truck and the Duramax has impress me the most, but hearing these problems has me concerned. Should I wait on an 05 or hope the 04 I get is okay? Are the problems isolated or has a lot of the trucks got more problems than these? Any reply would be very helpful. Thanks http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif
HappyCamper 07-21-2004, 10:03 PM So I guess I'm one of the lucky/happy ones.
Have an 2004.5 LLY and pulling a 12.5K fiver in Colorado over huge mountain passes. Truck does great. Have been religious about break in period (oil changes at 500mi, 2500mi, and transfer/diff change/allison paper filter + oil at 5000mi). Also, maybe my expectations were low (previous rig Toyota Sequoia with 27.5 ft. tag-along).
All I know is that the truck pulls the fiver without problems, even in 95 degree weather. I hear a few horror stories on the board - and I guess I'm part of the lucky majority. Based on what I know though, most experiences are like mine.
Anyway, I'd reccomend the truck. I'm really happy with my rig.

RickDLance 07-21-2004, 10:50 PM I have had terribly mpg since new and overheating problems since 25,000 miles. GM called me today and their offer is a $2500 discount on a new truck. This will be above and beyond my best deal. Should I take it. I have 50,000 miles on the truck.
_nar_ 07-23-2004, 06:30 PM Well considering right now there is a $4000 loyalty rebate when trading for another GM I think 2500 is a bit low. Unless they mean you get that rebate plus another 2500. I would look into that.
I have to agree with happycamper though, I only have 1700 miles but so far the truck has been great. AC is excellent, even in over 100 degree heat. Truck has excellent power, and gets decent mileage considering the way I drive. It actually gets 18-22 if I drive on the interstate like a grandma, but my foot seems to be stuck to the floor most of the time. Normal driving for me, with lots of throttle, and with quite a bit of idle time is getting 13.
RickDLance 07-23-2004, 07:38 PM Yes it is make my best deal, deduct $4000 (on 04 only), then deduct another $2500. Local dealer says he will sell me one at invoice. Works out great, except he can't find one he can get.
