: Hard Shifting after Trans Pan Replacement

After replacing my stock A1000 trans pan to a Mag-Hytec yesterday, I found that my truck was very hard to shift and would not even shift into first.

I did swap out the filter with the Allison deep filter, and I changed the spin-on filter (and kept the magnet). I drained the system for a couple of hours too.

I refilled it to the top bar on the stick for cold, then ran the truck up past 160 degrees and added a bit more till the fluid was in the HOT range and noticed some improvement.

The truck is a little easier to shift now and it just barely shifts into first gear after I had run it for an hour and had it hot.

Is this normal? Did I forget anything?

Thanks.

Make sure the fluid is full, and if a code set while running it from low fluid, that could also cause a problem. Usually a pressure switch code can be thrown when fluid is real low. Cycle the key a few times and see what happens..

Thanks Eric - so when you say a code is set, is that something I should see on the D.I.C., or do I have to have an OBDII reader to see a code?

There is no code that I can see, all of the guages appear to be within range, and there are no visible error lights.

Could it be that my intake filter is clogged?

I went through both the cold and hot fluid check processes outlined on this forum and the dipstick shows that it's within range for both, so I am wondering if this is a normal by product of a fluid change and if it will work itself out after some driving?

This needs to go in the transmission forum.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

i posted here since I saw other transmission questions on this forum.

Make sure the level is checked correctly. You may simply have a little air in the system. It'll probably mellow out after driving it more.

Did the Mag call for the deep suction and did you make sure the o-ring came out with the old suction screen? Sometimes it sticks up in the bore. Edited by: hoot

Well had a mod seen that they would moved it for you. Now they will just delete one of the topics. They should move this one as it already had responses.

I'll add to what Hoot says ...

Did you get a deep pan suction filter ?? Whats the part number ??

This is crucial and some bad things could happen if the suction filter falls out and the clutches go dry ...

Yes and yes. I removed the original orange o-ring and replaced the stock filter with the Allison deep filter (with new o-ring) 29537966.

I also made sure it was fully seated before capping the trans. The only thing I didn't do was pre-fill it, which I thought about, but the Mag Hytec instructions said nothing about doing this, and I figured if I tried to pre-fill it, it'd drain anyway out the bottom.

Truck seems to be improving with driving now, but it's still not back to what it was prior to this project and I'm a little worried that I may be doing some damage to it.

I've checked fluid hot and cold about 6 times, just double checking myself and just cannot see what the problem could be.

I also fully blew out the new pan before installing it with an air gun, to make sure no residual crud was left inside.

I can post pics when I get home if it'd help?

OK just ran it past 160* again and fluid on dipstick looks good - just a bit past hot, but that can be attributed to splashing on removal perhaps.

But that made me wonder - can this stiff shifting problem ocurr if you put too MUCH fluid in there? Even if that's the problem, I'm literally maybe 1/8" over the hot line when the engine is hot, so I don't know that this is the problem - but worth mentioning.

Here's pics of my install.

Another idea - could it be that I got a faulty intake filter that might be plugged or something?

Does anyone know if the filters ship with any kind of barrier or packing in the intake valve that needs to be removed before it's put into use?

I gave it quick a visual before installing but I'm thinking maybe I should have gone over it more closely.

I haven't seen any protective covers of any sorts to remove prior to using . From Allison it just comes in a box wrapped in paper ,nothing special.

I can't see the level of fluid being that detrimental but then again I don't have that extra solenoid either.

At this point I would drain it off and just drive it or drain the fluid in a clean container and drop the pan.Maybe just maybe you bumped the sump filter and it's partially out or just disturbed.

Strain the fluid thru a paint strainer for reuse.

Good luck.

On Edit : Drained for two hours? Wow maybe there is air trapped in a solenoid .

At anytime did your information center in dash give you a gear shift inhibit message? I think you have a code stored probably because you might have put it in gear with fluid being low. Refill trans and make sure it is full before you put it in any gear. I do not believe you hurt anything and the solenoids are not to blame unless disconnected by accident.
