: Bunkhouse Trailers
dieselman 07-12-2004, 06:17 AM Ok everybody, I need some help. Finally going to get into camping with a camper with the kids, tents are getting old. I need to know who makes a good bunkhouse travel trailer. I seem to only find 29-30 ft and would like a little bigger. Any help? Thanks

I know your plight. I do not recal the brand but I have seen floor plans that have a triple staggered bunk in the back and a bed in the front and there are a few other variations as well but I have usually seen them in trailers of 31 to 33 feet. It is a bit far for you to go but TomRaper in Richmond Indiana has a LOT of trailers that may have this floor plan new and used (several hundred of them on hand) and it might be worth trip to see what is out there to find what you want.Edited by: snoman
dieselman 07-12-2004, 06:17 PM bump for more input. Thanks
BigBlackMax 07-12-2004, 06:49 PM I hesitate to reply because there are so many and everyone loves the brand they currently own.
We have owned two bunkhouse models: 25SLB Coleman Caravan and 31LBHS Cedar Creek. The Caravan was unique when introduced, but now many have copied and improved the idea (Outback, Keystone, etc).
The 31LBHS (TT), 32LBHS (5er), and even a 362LBHS Cedar Creeks are top dog for bunkhouse models IMHO. Being in the RV capitial of the world I have looked at about every make and visited several of the factories first hand. We went the 31LBHS route because I wanted a TT not a 5er. Check out CedarCreekRVClub.com for feedback from LBHS owners (it's a very popular floorplan).
Diesel Dad 07-13-2004, 08:53 AM We have a Cardinal 312-BH, which is a 33' 7" 5er with double bunks and two slides. About 2500 lbs. pin weight and approx. 11,000 lbs. wet weight.
Here is a link to pictures of our trailer: Trailer Pics (http://rv-there-yet.com/our_trailer.htm)
The Cedar Creek are nice. Also check out the Jayco Eagle 325BHS.
Can you tell use any more ? How many kids ? What features ? What do you plan to tow it with ?Edited by: Diesel Dad
dieselman 07-13-2004, 12:28 PM Sure, plan to tow it with the 2500HD, D/A. I have 3 kids and small pet. I wanted a bunkhouse with a little larger shower than most have or a slide in the master bedroom. Most have a slide in living quarters, but not in bedroom.
I'll take a look at the ones you suggested. I also didn't want to move to a fiver because I use the bed otherwise.
Thanks.
DevilDog 07-14-2004, 01:30 PM Dieselman,
Not mentioned is the camper I own. 301BHS TT Cougar by Keystone. Queen bed in front, nice living area and quad bunks in the rear with their own tv, tray pull out, wardrobe and drawers. Also have the outside garage storage area, and plenty of storage throughout. No problems with unit, was well impressed with quality and towing it. About 6800 lbs. UVW.
Would like to have the queen slide, but most are only on the 5vers. I will upgrade to a fifth wheel in future years, but want to get at least 5 good years on this one before trading up again. Pulls well, easy set up, easy pull off, wife loves it.
Only other floor plan by cougar, and I looked at plenty by all manufacturers before I bought, is the 304BHS TT. it came out about two months after I bought my 2004. It has an additional slide in the rear with two bunks and an entertainment center for the rear bedroom. KeystoneRV.com is the site.
Good Luck.
dieselman 07-14-2004, 06:13 PM Thanks for the input everybody.
Check out Cardinal 312-BH, It is a very nice unit. You can order it with a king bed in the master. Makes it worth it. I am going to pomona Oct 20th to try and buy one.
dieselman 08-08-2004, 06:18 PM I looked at the cardinal, but the salespeople never said anything about a king bed. I'm going to go look for the brochure right now.
I am not sure if it will show the king in the brochure but I know you can get it because My wife and I saw one in Lancaster CA. The dealer said They will only order the trailer with a king bed because they can't keep it in stock. People love it. Check out the savoy by holiday rambler. It nice!!! If it had a slide on the master bedroom , I would buy it. Built better and I like the layout. Three bunks which I need for my kid's. I am going to A big Rv show in Oct 20th. I hope I own one of these 5th wheels. Hope this helps

Call me crazy, but that just seems stupid on the dealer's part. If I knew there was something that my customers loved, but didn't keep them in stock, that would just be bad for business.

speedracer 08-12-2004, 09:11 PM Check out Crossraods Cruiser also, they have TT and Fifth wheels, Build quality is real good, and they have a new Bunkhouse with a rear garage, they offer a Insulation upgrade, its a foil bubble (You got me?) but the stuff really works, checked out a bunch of trailers on a hot day, and the ones with the Insulation upgrade really had a noticable difference.
You can get some good deals at RV direct.com, and RVwholsalers.com. Also check out Open Roads Forum, premier site for all things RV. Good Luck!
BigdaddyG 09-05-2004, 01:46 AM My buddy just bought a Forrest River Wildcat quad bunk model fifth wheel. Pretty nice rig about 33' long. He really like it. My wife liked it too and wanted to trade in our double bunk model for a while.
oozamalak 09-13-2004, 09:48 PM We have a 2002 Cougar 281 (approximately 30') with triple bunks in the back. I think the New Cougars are 33' and have extra storage in the back. Some of the new Cougars are equipped with an extendable rear bumper, nice for carrying the bikes around.
KayakCouple 09-18-2004, 08:19 AM Check out http://www.rv.net and search the travel trailer section for "bunkhouse", a manufacturer's name, etc. You will find discussions on the quality/value of individual manufacturer's, which brands people recommend, how much off of MSRP you should get, and more.

You're losing it Dennis. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif He's saying that the dealer orders them all with the King size bed because everyone loves them so much. As a result of everyone loving them they sell a ton of them and have a hard time keeping them in stock.
baimpala 09-18-2004, 10:03 AM Losing it, hell I've already lost it! Guess I read it wrong the first time. . . http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

aketay 09-22-2004, 11:23 PM I have a Forest River Flagstaff BH about 30' long. Nearing the end of our second season with it and nary a problem. Also tow a two bike trailer behind with the scooters. Walk through them all and go to www.rv.net forums. They have a large membership and many expiriences. See avtar.
HotRod65 10-07-2004, 06:41 PM I have a 25ft erolight and it has a double bunk bed in the back.
Keifer 10-13-2004, 08:02 PM We also have the cardinal 312BH and use fulltime during the summer. If you can use the fifth wheel it is the best value I could find.

Nice pics! My wife and I looked at a cardinal 35' 5th wheel. It had a suround sound, fireplace and a den. We also loved the standard things like heated storage tanks etc.

Still looking mainly at tag trailers since I use the bed and don't want to take a hitch out if I can avoid it.
Diesel Dad 10-16-2004, 10:10 PM Cardinal also makes the 312-BHLE as a tag. You can see it on the Forest River web site.
I would take a 5er any day of the week. There are many hitch options
that leave the bed totally free like the new Reese signature, B&W, Pull-rite
etc. Or you can use a gooseneck adapter and a gooseneck hitch.
People who want to leave the hitch with the trailer leave the hitch
hooked up and pull the pins that hold the hitch down to the bed, raise
the jacks and voila, hitch gone with no hard labour.
A 5er is easier to tow, more stable and not prone to sway. Just
finished a pretty harrowing towing day and glad to have a 5er and
duallies.

NTX_Brian 10-28-2004, 04:13 PM I have a 2000 Sportsman 3004SS, quad bunks. We really enjoy it.
Due to our job loss, it may be for sale soon, are you still looking?

Tsckey 10-28-2004, 05:19 PM Dieselman,
If you haven't already made up your mind or bought something else, the Nash or Arctic Fox 32D is worth a look. I have an Arctic Fox, but not that model, and it is a terrific trailer. The Nash and Fox trailers by Northwood are structurally the same, but just about everything that is optional on the Nash is standard on the Fox. They run heavy, but you have the truck to tow it. My friend and neighbor has a Cougar 301BHS. I've been in it and it seems like a nice unit. He uses it a lot and always has a smile on his face. Good Luck,
TC
BarryD 11-04-2004, 10:36 AM If you thought buying a vehicle was bad wait until you start to deal with
the RV Dealer !! I have never met a bigger collection of dim wits than RV
dealers.
Most RV's look like they were put together by the village idiot. Take your
time and you will find the right unit. Shop by price and be prepared to
drive a little to get the best deal.
Good Luck!
Happy KZ Owner
DavidDieselDude 12-16-2004, 08:42 AM Have you looked at Jayco. I particularly like the Eagle model but there are bunkhouses in the Flight and Feather models too.
Look at http://www.jayco.com
howard_m18 12-30-2004, 05:18 PM dieselman, check out the trailer at the trailer life home page. It's 30' & has a bunk house slide!! www.trailerlife.com (http://www.trailerlife.com) It's the Conquest265 B.H.;) ;) ;)
rvtrailerpuller 01-16-2005, 04:18 AM We currently have a Jayco 31 BHDS which has a queen bed in front, a sofa and dinette slide, and behind that a bunkhouse slide which our kids absolutely love. This is a very roomy and comfortable trailer - a huge amount of space for a family of four. We traded up from a Rockwood 7 1/2 foot wide 25 foot bunkhouse with no slides. We loved the Rockwood but it was very cramped.
speedracer 02-03-2005, 07:43 PM Originally posted about the Crossroads Cruiser Bunkhouse with the Garage,
Well check out the 30ft Bunkhouse double slide, corner shower model. Its sweet, well made, I have one sitting next to my house.
The Cardinal's a real nice 5th wheel also, they are heavy so you have to watch your weight, see how much truck you have to tow with Before you buy.
5th Wheel is the way to go, I have both and though the 5th wheel is twice as big, it feels 10 times more stable then my Toyhauler.
