I was blasting some clay out of my wheels on my '03 2500HD the other day and a layer of plastic came off the aluminum wheels.
My 03 Quadrasteer Suburban doesn't seem to have this crap on its wheels.

I think they all run some kind of coating to protect the wheel. My '03 has it, as have my other GM vehicles with aluminum wheels. It should not peel very easy. You may be able to get the wheel replaced under warrenty.

The aluminum portion of my wheel doesn't seem to have any sort of film on it (or I just haven't seen it yet). However, the "chrome" plastic hub cover (with the plastic lug-nut covers) is obviously plated with an immitation metallic film. One of these hubs started losing it's chrome film for some reason. Took it to the dealer, and they replaced with no charge under warranty.

They have to have a clear coating. You would never see bare polished aluminum not haze out unless it is coated. By the way.... the PYO's are made in Hungary.

Yeah mine flaked off under the pressure hose. No warranty for me, I am at 46,000 miles.

SOME of the PYO's may be made in Hungary, but mine say "Made in USA" right under the ALCOA stamp on the back face.

I've noticed a clear plastic coating peeling off of my factory aluminum wheels. Should this be brought to the attention of the stealership ? Would warranty repair or replace the wheels for this ? What effect will lack of coating have on the aluminum wheels ? My first thought is to strip the coating completely off, but I don't want the Aluminum to look crappy !

Left untouched, the aluminum will oxidize, and the oxidation will creep under the clear coat, which will then peel off. NFG. GM should replace. I beat the tar out of my wheels, and no trouble yet. We'll see what happens when I fire up the new steam cleaner .
