Leave for a week on Lake Powell, only to come back and find that the tailgate is gone.

What a pisser.

Anyone know where to get one? White.

Is there any way to lock these things?

you can buy a pop lock to lock your tailgate $20

Had some friends in Houston who would put a hose clamp around the slotted hinge. Then at least a screwdriver is needed to remove it. Also will slow them down considerably if they would still try to remove it.

How does that work?

I did the hose clamp too.

Mcgard used to make a tailgate lock for that slotted hinge, but not for the new models. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

This was one of the things I hate about my GMC. While some folks on here didnt beleive me a few months ago that this happens...its pretty common. I havent had time to look at the locking handles but I really need to.

I wish I had thought of it.

It sucks. Out of a year, this is the only week that it has spent in a parking lot. Mostly, it sits in the garage, or has me within 100 yds of it.

My buddies 99 PSD locks the gate with the doors.......That would have been nice.

Cost?

I installed a Bully Lock on my 'gate. It looks more factory than the pop-n-lock. I figure that in the worst case, it would slow down a thief.

After you do get a replacement, blow a hole thru it w/a 12ga and nobody will want it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Seriously, it is a concern that I have also. Can't stop the determined but did use several loops of hookup wire around the spring clips on the cable ~ delaying tactic.

Used to have a problem with tailgates and spare tires, seems a few years ago everyone was having them stolen, I ran that McGuard tailgate lock on my old truck--it just screwed in place of one of the hinge bolts. They won't fit the new trucks? New truck has a spare tire lock, so that is covered.

Mannytranny; try your friendly local junkyard. There are loads of used tailgates around, and white is the most common. If you still can't find one, call around to body shops, they'll know wheree to get one.

Well, they are easily damaged (how many "work truck" tailgates have you seen with the big crease in the top rail from carrying a pipe or timber over the closed gate?) and real quick to snatch. It's always been an issue with pickups as long as I can recall. My bed cap window covers the top of the gate and I keep it locked. When I had my cap off for a spell last Fall/Winter, I took the tailgate off and left it in the garage when I parked my truck at the airport for a few days. My buddy in WVA had his tailgate snatched off his F-150 in a busy Lowes parking lot on a Saturday afternoon while he ran in for 10 minutes to buy some drywall screws.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif Locks are only for honest people, and a determined thief will steal regardless, but it doesn't hurt to make it more difficult for the a-holes to do their deeds. Wasn't there a thread a while back with a tailgate lock that worked with the factory remote door lock and locked the tailgate when you locked the doors. Going to have to check around, I usually keep a list of goodies that I might want to add when $$ permits and that may have been one of the items.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifAs others have already said, sorry about your loss. Stealing anything off of our trucks is akin to cattle rustling and the posse should be sent out immediately to track the dirty varmints down and when found they should be shot on sight! Seriously though, I could look around here in the metro Milwaukee area for you, but I think your local junkyard could do a search for you and have one shipped. When you find a lock that works, please let the rest of us know.

I installed the "PopnLock". Controlled by the door lock signal, worked as advertised. But after just over a year (with a one year warrenty) it failed, in the locked position. The lady at PopnLock said the gears have stripped and "Let's make believe it is less than a year old". She sent me a replacement part for free and it has been working fine since.

But I decided it was getting excessive wear by operating everytime the door locks operated so I installed a small toggle switch in the control line. Now it operates only when I feel the tail gate or bed contents are vulnerable.

Sounds like what a bunch of guys were joking about at the local truck/tractor pull Sat night here. One of the guys black tailgate got banged up by a trailer, they were all laughing about how he should go swap it with another buddies tail gate while he was weighing in with another truck. He didnt do it, but it was an idea.

He knew his buddy would figure it out a few days later, and he didnt do it.

I also had the concern of repeated cycling of the lock and wear. The toggle switch is a great idea. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

I put the "Bully" lock on mine and it works great. It's manual and looks like factory installed. Only problem is getting extra keys made, can't find the blanks. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I installed a Dyno brand lock. The system uses the same lock as the power door locks and they cycle 1000s of times. I would probably forget to flip the switch and loose my tailgate/belongings. It is easy enough to install a switch if you like and they sell one for those w/o power locks.

Take a look on ebay...awhile back in the Boise area some moron was stealing tailgates from local car/truck dealers and reselling them on ebay for $500 a pop. The rocket scientst had like 15 of them when he got caught...idiot went to a dealership with cameras.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Below are some pictures on how to use a hose clamp to discourage theft. Tie wraps would work too, but a sharp knife or side-cutters would take care of the tie wrap.
The first pic shows the clamp put around the hinge. Then put the tailgate back on and tighten the clamp. You can turn clamp the other way so that you have to get under the truck with a screwdriver (or nutdriver) to remove it . Just insert the screw/nut driver between the bed and the bumper if you position the clamp this way. I believe you can even position the clamp so that the tailgate has to be closed when you loosen the clamp. This should confuse a would-be thief enough so that he will probably give up.

I have a manual locking POP LOCK. Someone advised me, with a Chev truck that tailgates were very popular for theft. The lock certainly doesn't look the greatest, but it should encourage the bastard to move onto another truck. Need to keep the lock lubed, during the winter. It works.

I've got it on my truck and it has been working great for about 2 years. It works off of the remote and the door locks. If you pull hard enough you will only pull the handle off or bend some parts in the mechanism.

manny,

Do you have insurance? Uninsured motorists would cover any damage or loss to your vehicle. I have it and something like this would cost me about $100. There is some drawbacks to using insureance though. A lot of claims and they may drop you.

Like mentoined before. If they want they will take it. They could just take your whole truck and part it out in a garage. But more than likely they will take the easier one instead of taking time on something that is modified.

On my last truck - I reversed the hinges (put the slotted hinge on the other side) you are not removing the tailgate unless you have the right tools. Use to work in a bad part of town - found it down many times with some of my co-workers tailgates missing. I will try to do the same when I get my new 2005 http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

sprintmod1,

Here is the link Dyno Products.com (http://www.dynolock.net/Dyno-Elelock.htm)
There is a picture there as well as instructions. We have a CC LB and they provided plenty of wire to get it inside w/o drilling.

Enjoy!

When I came home one time from work two years ago some local kid used my tailgate as a chalkboard with a rock. It looked like some type of Picaso painting. I had taken it to a local body shop to be fixxed under insureance and it cost me about $100 to do that part. I had some other things at the same time done. But it looks better now with out the badging all over it other pieces painted to match.

I would that's what it's for and most are afraid to use it.It shouldn't raise your rates,Accidents raise your rates.

When my insurance company paid 23K plus for a stolen truck my insurance rate was unaffected.

I have to put a claim in for hail stones it will fall under the Comprehensive coverage, not even hesitating.

Following the few posts here, I thought about the worm clamp (hose clamp) trick. But I went one better. Grind the head off a hose clamp bolt and TIG weld on a head from a stainless steel screw. Not just any random screw, but a #14 pin spanner screw. This is an uncommon screw type, to say the least. With the right wrenches you can still get the tailgate off, but not in 20 seconds.

I have the assembly made up, but it is very, very tight getting the clamp
into the tailgate.

Whoa, sorry to hear about another victim.

I've had this done to me before many times (I own a service station in NJ, auto rip-off capital of the world, & I worry about securing tail-gates every time a GM p/u shows up for repairs) GM tailgates get stolen ALL the time-everywhere. Do yourself a favor & install a $20 (mechanical) pop-n-lock (real easy), & for heavens sake, get rid of those ridiculous 'un-able to support any kind of real load' 'rot out all the time' quick-disconnect cables & install some chains. After all, who really ever needs 'quick-disconnects' to remove their tail-gate (except thieves-or to prevent a theft)?

With chains (to replace those cheesy straps) & a pop-n-lock, it would be a lot easier to just steal the truck....
