: Turbo question
Hired Gun 11-06-2006, 02:27 PM Well my stocker has made a funny whining noise since spring. Yesterday I noticed after shutting the truck down it made a rubbing noise against the housing. I wonder how long it will last, and if its better when I upgrade to either a single ATS charger, or call Idahorob and go twins.

Take the aluminum snout off. See how much play you have Jarod. Gently hold the nut and move it in and out of the bore. More than 1/16" fore and aft play or 3/32nd" side to side, and you are on borrowed time. Really borrowed time.
Rubbing on the housing you say? I wouldn't drive it much if at all until you get that charger changed. They do not last long when that happens, and even a mild bark, or spike of the throttle will crash the compressor wheel, sending pieces into your CAC, and a possible engine runaway condition from the oil out of the turbine feed line.
Then you have to use plywood to shut the engine down. Not fun buddy. Make those calls ASAP!
A5K's are well proven as are the Twins. Pick your poison and :grd:
C.A.P 11-06-2006, 02:51 PM I have a stock IHI if need be ! it has low miles on it too!

Thought you already had the A5K just wasn't installed yet?

Hired Gun 11-08-2006, 11:40 AM I do but let it go to a buddy in Georgia for a race truck. Now I am trying to decide what would be the best for me.
McRat 11-08-2006, 11:52 AM There are more options out there now:
PPE GT40R and GT42R water-cooled BB chargers
High Tech Turbo S300G system
BD Charger
Garrett GT37R system
These are all complete systems.
The twins appear to be a very good system, but I haven't personally tested them. The HTT charger is very streetable, very towable, and very high powered.
Lots of choices out there now. First figure out how you want to use your truck, how much you want to spend, then look at the various options.
Supersmoke 11-08-2006, 11:56 AM Go with the GT series from forcedinductions.com, they build turbos from every manufacture. They have some badass GT42's, GT45's, GT47's...etc
Hired Gun 11-08-2006, 02:01 PM Well my truck is a farm truck, hauling truck, grocery getter. I want to pull a little bit, and I do like to race some. Money well. I hate spending 5 thousand on a turbo. Heck I just put 5 in a tranny last winter. Why are they so high for the GM camp, and cheap for the dodge crew? There has to be relief out there.
Thanks McRat. I so do respect your info and knowledge.
I am running the PPE hot +2 and soon a lift pump from RyanU. What do I need to make the truck sing but yet be a good tow rig for the farm?

I'm a firm believer in the High Tech charger for all-around performance. It's a good tow charger, and a good race charger. I test everything I sell, and try to get folk the right information on what works best for their application.
The PPE GT40R is working very well for an all-around charger as well, but I'm not finished testing it. So far so good.

Hired Gun 11-17-2006, 08:24 AM Ok. Can you all tell me what the best is to date. I have a feeling that I will be needing it in less than 30 days.
SmokeShow 11-17-2006, 08:54 AM Maybe after tonight. ;)

Depends on how you use your truck.
Both the HTT Turbo system and PPE GT40R system are good choices for a daily driver with towing duties, yet will put out serious power.
The PPE has a little better throttle response, and the HTT has better performance past 3000 rpm.
The PPE is water-cooled, and the HTT is oil cooled.
Hired Gun 11-17-2006, 11:30 AM I use my truck as a tow truck for my 25 foot trailer. I haul a 850 D Case Dozer, and have large tractors MX285 CaseIH is the largest with duals all the way around. I haul cattle and fertilizer all summer. Loads of 13 ton or down. I do want to pull a little, and race a little, but not too much due to the fact that I farm a large amount of the time. My truck takes me out on the weekend to my favorite places to eat, I hit Wally World, and take my 3 year old daughter for fun rides as she giggles.
I do plan to run duel fulers and want to be around mid 500 hp range.
Slick 11-17-2006, 11:35 AM With a larger turbo(Htt or equivalent), you'll be mid 500's without dual fuelers I would think.
Hired Gun 11-19-2006, 09:16 AM Turbo went boom yesterday. I was in the field unloading tobacco stalks, and she gave up the ghost. I need info fast on a turbo.

Hired Gun 11-21-2006, 07:37 AM Good morning Diesel Place!
Man I am so excited this morning. Why? Well I talked to McRat yesterday for at least a half an hour. I have a plan in place and hope to call him back tomorrow and find a ship date for my goodies.
I am going to order the HTT charger and a couple other goodies from Pat. This guy is awesome to talk to. He talks and asks questions, and will give you time to explain what you want. It is a great thing to find someone who cares about diesels the way he does. Two thumbs up to McRat. He even pm'ed me a home number if I needed to talk through the holiday time or Sundays.
Thanks Pat!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Kat I assume answered the phone. If so, then she is very polite as well. Thanks again.
