I only have 255 miles on my truck and something has come up that I need to tow a Bass Boat that weights about 3000 lbs about 450 miles. I know the book says to wait for the first 500 miles before towing, but I need to do it now. Do you'll think it will hurt anything to do this?

No you will not hurt anything, actually I think it will be good for the truck. Will help with the break-in.

Thanks Bone Cracker for the reply. I really didn't think so either, but just wanted someones else opinion on it. Off we go.

TX, I would make sure that you are not "too hard" on it and make sure you are up to temps before any aggressive driving. Should be fine. Most will tell you to drive it like you intend to from day one. I on the other hand put about 250 on mine before I started pulling but you should be fine with that amount of weight.

500 no towing
then 500 towing (lots of short trips(Heat cycles))
Then change gear fluid.
The manufacture of the rear recommends a 500 mile break-in.

Mine had like 240 miles on it. First haul was a 32ft trailer 11500 gvw. Been working hard ever since.

Yep, the true break in in the first 500 miles is the rear end gears bedding in with each other.

The manual says 500 before towing...probably will not hurt anything, but why risk messing up your warranty?

I was graced with learning from a nascar mech. he always said breakin is just wear. drive it like you are going to drive it the rest of its life and make sure you change your oil after the first 500 miles due to the crap the is left in the engine from assembly.

Well I don't have time to put the other 245 miles on the truck before I need to leave with the boat. Don't know how I would mess up my Warranty, do you think I am going to say, hey I towed with it at 255 miles. Don't think so. Sort of like all the finger sticks and EGR Blockers that everyone is not telling the dealers about when they have problems.

Just make sure you change the oil as soon as you get back. There will be lots of metal in it.

When I hit my destination after my first tow I had about 950 miles on the truck. I had a drain pan and fluid with me and just crawled under and pulled the drain plug and changed it.

You shouldnt have any problems. I towed 7k the day after I got my truck. Just change the diff oil after and it wouldnt hurt to get a oil change.

I always break my trucks in the way I normally drive them. Hard on the gas (deisel) brakes and tow what ever needs to be towed. I think the engine runs better when you break them in hard other wise when all the parts seat then you drive it hard you push the part harder and sometimes further than where everything has seatted. Just make sure you change the fluids when they need to be change or before.
