: True or False
2006LBZCCSWB 11-05-2006, 07:40 AM First post here, just bought my first diesel and have a question.
Dealer is telling me that if I change my own oil warrantee will be voided, service can only be done by certified mechanics.
Any truth to this?
Thanks.
GMC2500HD 11-05-2006, 07:46 AM No there is no truth to this. They are just trying to get money out of you for services.
RayMich 11-05-2006, 08:43 AM Make sure you keep accurate records and receipts of eveything you buy for servicing your truck. Keep a detailed log that contains date, odometer, what was done and by whom as well as cost of each item and where & when you bought it. If you have a buddy helping you, have him sign the log along with yourself. As long as you do that, it is illegal for them to deny your warranty simply because you mainteined your truck yourself.
In most cases you won't need that intricate level of detail but if you do this, they will have a very hard time refuting you in a court of law.
I would also suggest changing dealers. anyone who lies like that, to force you to do business with them is a cheating scumbag and I wouldn't trust them with anything.

Welcome to the site, you have come to right place for answers. Go to www.mygmlink.com (http://www.mygmlink.com) and register your LBZ. There you will be able to create a log book of maintenance that you do on your truck. Also if by chance you ever do need any warranty work, it will also be put into the log by GM. Check it out.............Once again:welcome2:
luckyman 11-05-2006, 09:04 AM Go here http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/warranty.htm to read about the Magnuson-Moss act. Specifically, skip down to the part titled "Tie-in sales provisions".
I agree with above post, find a new dealer. :)

Thanks. no doubt that the "certified mechanics" would find all sorts of problems while you were gettin the oil changes. i agree find a new dealer , or at least go to the sales manager ,or better the owner of the dealership and let him know what transpired. good luck.
Duramax 6.6L 11-05-2006, 09:19 AM I would find a different dealer, you DO NOT have to take the truck for service or warrantee work to the dealer you purchased it from.
2006LBZCCSWB 11-05-2006, 09:29 AM Thanks guys, the person at the dealer was the finance "woman" {of all things} I asked to show me in writing about this and she couldn't find it.
I thought it was bs from the get go. I asked the sales men and he said no but he would check into it. Yep good info here just in the few days of reading I've learned a bunch.
Thanks again.
That kind of statement from who ever it was at the dealership can kind of ruin any relationship.
If I were you I would ask to speak with the service manager in order to get this cleared up. Explain to him/her that you expect to have a long relationship with the service department and you want to make sure the information you are getting is accurate.
For me, I don't care to change the oil and do all of that stuff anyway, so I negotiated a free lifetime oil change program when I bought my truck.

:exactly:
Tell them to go pound sand this is still America
SLT223 11-05-2006, 10:13 AM They sound like a bunch of liars. I wouldn't take it to them for anything.
NCexRider 11-05-2006, 11:49 AM I had been told the same thing before, glad to know it's false.
luckyman 11-05-2006, 12:13 PM Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, is credited with making the statement that he would give his new cars away if the owner could be compelled to bring it back to him for parts and service.
Imagine how lucrative the automotive service industry would be for dealers and mfgs. if they had no competition. The legislature also recognized this and has been writing anti-monopoly laws for a hundred years.
I don't think there is a law against dealers and their reps lying to us though. Finance officers seem to be the biggest culprits. I guess if it was illegal to be a jerk, we might all have to spend a little time in jail sometimes. :)

BS dealer,blah-blah no warranty crap probably comes from the top so it's most likely useless to go to the sales manager or owner. Please tell us though the name of this dealer so it will forever be on everyone's s*** list.
GmTrucks4Life 11-05-2006, 12:57 PM :agreed: No there is no truth to this. They are just trying to get money out of you for services.
got-h2o 11-05-2006, 01:57 PM They tried telling my sister the same thing on her Tahoe. Needless to say, she found a new dealer. What if your truck breaks down across the country? GM warranty is GM plain and simple. A local dealer denied a friend of mine cosmetic warranty work on his '05 Z-71 b/c he didn't buy the truck from them. What a load of crap! He went 2 towns over and had no problems. Most of the time unless you know someone or have the answers, they'll tell you what they want. You came to the right place!
diesel_dream 11-05-2006, 04:41 PM and thats why its called a "stealership"
:D
no such thing on the warranty so dont worry

Keeping records and reciepts is a very good idea, but you don't have to prove your truck was serviced regularly, the dealer has to prove it wasn't. Unless the mechanic scrapes sludge out of your crankcase with a puddy knife that is hard to prove.
RayMich 11-06-2006, 08:03 AM Keeping records and reciepts is a very good idea, but you don't have to prove your truck was serviced regularly, the dealer has to prove it wasn't. Unless the mechanic scrapes sludge out of your crankcase with a puddy knife that is hard to prove. It is easy to keep records and save the receipts. It is better to have them and not need them than to end up in a p!$$!n match with a service writer and not have a way to prove you have maintained your truck properly. GM even tell you in the owners manual to keep records of your service history. But then, some people enjoy confrontations, so whatever floats your boat.
saratoga 11-06-2006, 10:35 AM Did the finance person tell you this after you refused the lo-jack, dealer installed security system (which they probably already installed), underbody rustproofing, paint protection, 3rd pary exended warranty, etc?
That's when it was sprung on me- "Your truck is diesel. It requires specifiec specialized maintenance like oil changes that you can't perform."
I told them to get lost.
bluejuice2003 11-06-2006, 06:43 PM Wow...yea....find a new dealer! If you choose to deal with the 2+ gallons of dirty oil, you can. I have mine done becasue I don't want to deal with recycling the used oil. Make sure you keep good records and receipts.
2006LBZCCSWB 11-06-2006, 07:17 PM Well I went back today and told them to keep the sales pitch. Walked out $1500.00 better off. I'll do my own service like I have done for every car I've owned. Thanks for the help.
