Just got back from vacation towing my boat thru the mountains of Idaho and am very pleased with my truck. Tackled a number of heavy duty summits and the only thing slowed me down was old people in vans or people riding their bicycles on a 6% holding up traffic for their training. The boat was an open bow so i had a bit of a wind drag so that affected my tow milage a bit. Overall averaged 14mpg over whole trip Boise, ID to Stanley,ID (via Sun Valley).

and I might add... I saw more GM diesels in the high mountains than Fords or Dodges...was quite pleasant to see that red badge

tswartos,
Welcome to the forum fellow Idahoan. I also live in Boise, and travel quite frequently to Stanley with my Terry 19N. Love my pulling economy and this truck in general. Tons of invaluable info on this forum. I've learned quite a bit over the last 4 months here.....GMAN

Thanks, I've been a regular reader on TDP for a couple years and just recently found this site.

On my most recent pull I was in southern Utah in the Dixie N.F. on the way to Panguitch Lake. There are some 8% grades up the mountain and I found that as long as I was between 2&3k on the rpm, I had tons of power. anything under 2 seemed to bog down a bit. I had the OD off and on occasion shifted to 3rd manually to keep the rpm's up. I was pulling a 5k lb. TT.
On the way down, the Allison took over and kept me off the brakes nicely. On occasion though the ingen was running into the 3200 rpm range. I was a little worried but I read something on this forum that indicated that the ECM will allow the engine to run up to 4600 rpm without a problem (though anytime that needle hits the red I get worried).

I did 2100 miles LA to Bryce Cyn and down to Lake Powell for houseboat trip. I hauled my Lance and Boat. Got to Bryce and dropped both of them at the RV park and drove all over that area. If you are ever there you have to drive the dirt road called: "Hells Backbone" Starts in Tropic, Utah ends at Boulder, Utah about 50 mi. On the way up there I averaged 10.7mpg doing 70-75mph with the air on. Lots of hills. In fact I think it's uphill all the way there. Passed lots of Fords and Dodges......I went to Panquitch too. It's a trout lake I could've circumnavigated in about 10 minutes with my boat. I don't think the trout guys would've liked that.........Gruber
