I know this topic has been discussed to death on this and other forums, but I have one question that I don't see the answer to in any of the previous threads.

I have an '01 8.1 that has been intermittently shutting off, but coming right back on, for some time now. It will shut off, the red battery light comes on, and then it will refire and keep running. This is a little different from the others who have posted that theirs would shut down and they had to restart it with the key.

Is this the same crank pos sensor problem??

Also, ( yeah I know I said I only had one question) in reading my $200 5-volume service manual, it says that when you replace the CKP sensor, you have to attach a scanner-type device and invoke a "learn mode" so that the computer can learn the characteristics of the new sensor. Is this a necessity? Has anyone ever done it? I really hate to have to take this to a dealer 'cause I always come out raw and can't sit for a few days.Censored

Sounds like crank sensor to me. Have to re-learn crank sensor variation, most scanners can do it, not just stealer.

It will run w/o the re learn just the timing won't be as accurate as it could be

I replaced mine and never did the relearn procedure. I was told that you don't have to do it. Haven't had any problems.

Mine does the same thing, problem is, it only does it when I don't have time to fool with it then won't do it again for several weeks. I need to just go ahead and change it before it goes out completely.

Thanks, gator & firefighter Now that I know I don't have to go to the dealer and get the learn thing done, I'll go ahead and change it.

8100HD Know what you mean. Mine has been shutting off once every month or so for over a year, now.

I need to put a gas tank module in it too, while I'm at it. The gas gauge has been erratic for 6 mos, too.

Yeah, my gas gauge just started to mess up as well.
