: SC III or IV
kracker 11-02-2006, 07:32 PM I need to upgrade my tranny and was curious as to witch kit is for me all I do is tow no serious drag racing maybee occasional romp on it I want to be able to tow on stage 2 without limping and also does sc III come with new clutches? I think mine are shot since Ive limped tranny 4 times now
Wolford 11-02-2006, 08:53 PM A stage III should do you just fine. And yes it does come with new clutches.
gtmax 11-02-2006, 09:11 PM I'd go with a Stage IV kit--just because it costs a more , it must be better! ):h
I read that it comes with an additional friction for the C3 clutch pack than the Stage III kit, plus special (trick) C3/C4 apply plates. It's said to be almost the equivalent to the Stage V when properly installed.
GMC-2002-Dmax 11-02-2006, 11:17 PM I have hammered my SC-III for over 55K miles.
I have run hundreds of dyno pulls and 1/4 mile passes, daily abuse with 500+ RWHP.
In all this time it has never even had a hiccup.
If you can afford the extra $$$$ get the SC-IV, if you cannot the SC-III should be fine.
Good Luck,

jdugie123 11-06-2006, 10:05 AM what is the difference from the suncost IV and the V is it just that they put it all together or do they add more disc
Cougar281 11-06-2006, 10:32 AM what is the difference from the suncost IV and the V is it just that they put it all together or do they add more disc
I think the IV and V are the same except the V is a complete transmission with a warranty, and the IV is a kit that can either be professionally installed or DIY installed.
b_erickson_00 11-06-2006, 10:39 AM how hard would it be to build up a ally using the IV?? Would it be cheaper to buy a IV and have the work done? Instead of buying a V?

Ask Ben (DuratotheMAX). He's built at least two... As for pricing, I don't know.

If you're considering doing it yourself, it would help having some sort of past transmission experience. Basic mechanical knowledge is good enough also. I have helped many members here install their kits by talking them through procedures.
ratlover 11-06-2006, 02:56 PM Stage 5 has a few extra tricks in it I believe.
Its not real hard doing a build.....but it is a heavy SOB so having a good place to do t with the proper tools and equipment. A friend or 2 is also very helpfull.
DURAtotheMAX 11-06-2006, 05:17 PM talk to Mike L or Eric and you'll be fine, not that hard, just take your time.
DieselSpeed 11-06-2006, 07:26 PM If I can chip in too - if you're anticipating having Mike L or Eric walk you thru an install, be sure you buy the kit thru them too. Its pretty cool they're willing to help on their time, at least make sure you compensate them for it.
jdugie123 11-06-2006, 09:14 PM about how long does it take to put the kit in i am debating taking it some were or doing it myself i am getting a new GN trailer so i need to get my tranny done because it is starting to slip and shift weird

You can do it in 2 days comfortably with proper setup and tech help. And, it will work the way you expected.:D
b_erickson_00 11-07-2006, 12:16 AM IS there anyone in the colorado area who would be interested in building one for me??? Also does anyone have a number or email for ats in denver.

jdugie123 11-07-2006, 09:45 AM i think i will let a shop do it that way i can use my warrenty to pay for most of it

Looks like you answered your own question ):h. ATS is in the CO area. Their # is right on their website 800-949-6002
jdugie123 11-07-2006, 11:11 PM does anyone know any good shops in texas around san antonio
dozerboy 11-08-2006, 12:37 AM Ask SC I bet they can recommend some.
jdugie123 11-08-2006, 09:33 AM thanks i will send them an email
ratlover 11-08-2006, 09:48 AM Best bet to find a good trans shop is either go to the company of choice or call them and ask for recomended shops. Or drive to CA with a truck load of sheep to trade ):h
UnderPSIDisplays 11-08-2006, 09:54 AM How is the torque converter that comes with the stage IV kit? Triple plate I think it said? Is this a decent converter that will handle some abuse or is it a waste of time and I should get something else? Not sure how it would hold up to pulling/nitrous. Thanks.

The converter that comes with SC 4 is a 1056 triple and is one of the best converters out there.

My 1056 works great.
Steezey 11-08-2006, 12:36 PM What if you have 0 tranny experiance? Actually a better question how hard is it to screw it up? And will ATS install Suncoast stuff?
dozerboy 11-08-2006, 10:12 PM I bet they would if the price was right like double the going rate.
Mike L. 11-08-2006, 10:24 PM What if you have 0 tranny experiance? Actually a better question how hard is it to screw it up? And will ATS install Suncoast stuff?
I bet they would. Joe would do it for them. I have done it for both ATS and Suncoast and they have helped me. It's not like nobody knows everyones secrets.):h
MYY2KHOG 11-09-2006, 08:54 AM Mike, what is the difference between the 1056 and the 1057? Is the Suncoast 1057 the same as the McRat 1057? Is one better for everyday type driving as opposed to more race or pull oriented?
Thanks
Mike L. 11-09-2006, 10:20 AM The 1057 is the McRat converter and is the quickest coupling converter out there, and the most fun IMHO. The 1056 is less aggressive as far as coupling and about 200rpm looser off the line. It is a great all around converter for anything you want to do.
MYY2KHOG 11-09-2006, 01:00 PM Thanks Mike, I'm probably going to go to SunCoast (only about 200 miles) sometime next year and get the IV/1057 package as well as the M/A transfer case fix done. Truck only has 4500 easy miles on it but I want to prepare for future EFI Live upgrades.
astieg 11-09-2006, 06:36 PM :exactly: I think the IV and V are the same except the V is a complete transmission with a warranty, and the IV is a kit that can either be professionally installed or DIY installed.

If you're going to drive all the way to ATS, you'd be best off to let them do their thing & take care of you on the whole deal IMO
Steezey 11-10-2006, 03:11 PM If you're going to drive all the way to ATS, you'd be best off to let them do their thing & take care of you on the whole deal IMO
Driving all the way to ATS would take me about 45 minutes. The thing is that their set ups are like 5-8K. How come they are so much more than Suncoast? Do they have other types of set ups like the SCIII and SCIV?
DieselSpeed 11-10-2006, 06:10 PM Straight from their website:
-ATS Built LCT-1000 Transmission
-ATS 5 Star Viskus Clutch Drive Torque Converter
-ATS Deep Aluminum Pan
$4698 - I'm guessing that doesn't include R&R, but includes the build labor.
ATS is more up front because you pay them to build it, too. SCIII or SCIV is cheaper up front b/c they're just shipping you parts, but it'll make up for it on the back side in labor if you have them installed.
Unless you build it yourself, you'll spend the same $$$ in the end either way. Take the price of the SCIII or SCIV, then call up a trans shop & ask them for a labor total to build the trans w/ your SC parts. I bet parts & labor will be the same total as if you go to ATS & have their stuff installed.
Steezey 11-10-2006, 06:21 PM Thats a good point DieselSpeed. I guess i never thought of it that way. But do you think if I could install it myself then would you say that SC is a better deal?
DieselSpeed 11-10-2006, 06:47 PM Depends on what's important to you. If you want warranty then you have to have one of them build it. If you want to save some $$$ up front, DIY. You only want to get into a build if you have plenty of clean space to do it in, and plenty of time to dedicate to doing it right.
smoop 11-10-2006, 06:53 PM Diesel speed.
Yes, we do offer 2 different kits for the guy that wants to do it himself or would take the economy approach. We also offer full transmission assy as do others. I do not interept that as "not being upfront"
Maybe your math is a little fuzzy. The figuires you mentioned, $4698.00 + R&R & fluid (approx $600) = $5298.00
SC Stage IV: $2780.00(posted on web-site) + R & R & installation+ fluid(approx $1400)= $4180.00
GO FIGURE:think:

Smoop,
I apologize - I thought I may have worded it funny after I hit "submit". I hoped nobody would interpret it that way.
What I meant by "up front" was where the build labor is being paid, as in parts & build labor is paid right up front on a full assembly - regardless of whether they use yours, ATS', anybody's - as opposed to a parts only purchase, where parts are paid for 'up front' & build labor is paid for later, once you get to a shop (not up front ):h )- again, regardless of whose kit they use.
Sorry again Smoop I should've worded a little better. :ro)
CGA03 11-10-2006, 11:02 PM On the website it looks like the stage V is 3500 complete, correct??? That would be the easiest.
smoop 11-11-2006, 08:44 AM Diesel Speed,
No Problem.
CGAO3,
The price you quoted does not include torque converter. Due to the fact we offer different converter options, the converter is priced seperate.
Regardless of what brand of parts or trans you choose, I would incourage you to purchase the parts thru the shop that will be doing the installation.
There is nothing wrong with operating on a budget but you certainly want the shop to feel good about doing the job and not hesitate to step up and take care of a problem, if one should appear. In order to do that they have to make enough profit to stay in business and be there when you need them. As far as requesting one mfg to install another's parts, while doing that could be possible, IMHO I think it would be politically incorrect.
Smoop:)

wellgeo03 11-11-2006, 06:14 PM So regarding what DieselSpeen mentioned earlyer, if you buy a Stage V it comes with warranty, but do the Stage III and IV's come have warranty if installed by a certified shop or if you DIY? Again this question is posted with the all mighty budget in mind -:t for those of us who are looking to save a litte $$$ but still want to have a good reliable tranny.:grd:
Thanks guys!

Suncoast will warranty any of their parts but the shop will be responsible for assmbly warranty. Pick your shop carefully.:D
wellgeo03 11-12-2006, 12:18 AM Thanks Mike L.
I have just recently limped my tranny for the first time. 5th gear limped from a gentle roll in at about 85 km/hr. I have also seen as high as 30% locked TQ slip. I am quite sure I am going to go with a Suncoast kit, but I am not sure what would be best, a Stage III or IV. I have an Edge with attitude as well as a superchips flashpaq stacked. Will the III hold up with no pulling and just everyday jumping on the go peddel driving, or would a IV be a better choice?
Thanks in advance!
Sheldon
Bulldogger 11-12-2006, 10:27 AM Stage III is rated at 500/900 at the rear wheels according to Suncoast. Now according to people on this board it will hold past those numbers, several members have done stage III kits and haven't had any failures. I have 17,000 miles on mine without any problems. If I were to do it again I would go stage III again. I would only run a higher kit if I were racing or pulling on drugs. (My truck not me:) )
STLCHEVYHD 11-16-2006, 06:43 PM I need to upgrade my tranny and was curious as to witch kit is for me all I do is tow no serious drag racing maybee occasional romp on it I want to be able to tow on stage 2 without limping and also does sc III come with new clutches? From what I hear, if you'd quit competing with that yellow Dodge on who can junk their tranny the fastest, you wouldn't have these problems!
