Silly newb question here, but where can I look on a truck and tell which engine it is? I've looked at the window sticker, inside the doors and glove box and on the engine. It's too dark or I'm blind...

I believe if you look at the 8th number in your vin, if it's a "1" it's an LB7, if it's a "2" it's a LLYhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

And welcome to the forumhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Thanks! Just got the truck last week and was oblivious to any engine changes, but based on the VIN it's a LLY.

A couple of things would be more horse power & torque for the LLY

Another thing you can look at. Underneath there is a 55 gallon drum GM calls a muffler. Just in front of that is a CAT big enough to hide a VW in.

Well it's on a "different" forum, but here's a really good write up about the LLY engine:

http://www.thedieselpage.com/duramax/lly2004.htm

Keep in mind this was written before the LLY was officially released so the power numbers listed in it are not correct.

The engine as release is rated at 310HP with 590ft/lbs of torque. That power is restricted in the 1st and 5th gears to the LB7 output of 300HP and 520ft/lbs of torque to help preserve the Ally. All trucks with LLY engines and manual transmissions are restricted to the LB7 power levels as well due to concerns about the dual mass flywheel used on them.

Hope that will answer some of your questions...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Drive it. One is slow and the other is quick.

One engine has been around for over 4 years and everyone knows its strengths and weaknesses. The other engine has been around for less than 1 year and no one knows how it will be...http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
