: Noise in Front End Might Be...???

Purchased a new 2004 LLY (see sig.) in March '04 and, within 1000 mi., I started to hear a intermittent, subtle, groaning/rubbing sound coming from the right front while applying the brakes at speeds over 30 MPH. Although the noise could often be heard at anytime while braking, it seemed worse if I was braking more aggressively or turning to the left while braking. Thought it might just be the new brakes and had intended to have it checked but, after some time, it seemed to go away.

Now with 5,000 mi., within the past several days, that same noise has returned and, while at the dealer today, I asked the Svc. Mgr. about it. He had his guy test drive it and they noticed it as well. A cursory check revealed nothing special and I was asked to schedule an appointment so that they could check it more thoroughly and maybe check with the techs. at GM. He also said that their dealer tech. thought there might be a bulletin out on this problem.

Is anyone aware of any bulletins or other info that has come from GM about this???

Gm uses very hard pads on their disc brake for long life. It is likely that the pad and or rotor face has glazed over and it growling because it does not have a smooth contact (it is catching and slipping at a high oscillation rate cause the noise) I would try new pads and a rotor too if you can get them to do it.

snoman—Thanks for your thoughts. Dropping it off tomorrow for an appointment on Tuesday. We'll see what they say!

Received a call from the dealer this afternoon about the noise in my truck. After quite a bit of investigative work, phone calls to GM Tech Services, searching over bulletins issued about front-end noises, a number of test drives using some sort of listening devices that were strategically placed around the front end, they discovered that the noise was coming from...(you ready for this?)...the tubular steps that were dealer installed as an option!!! Apparently, according to the Service Manager, something in the front of the step on the right hand side was loose and was rubbing against the frame and was creating the rubbing, groaning noise that everyone was hearing. It wasn't anything having to do with the brakes as was suspected by so many, nothing to do with suspension, front end, etc., all the logical sources. Well, after several hours of diagnostic guesswork, at least they tell me that it's fixed and, of course, it's covered under the warranty. I'll have my baby back tomorrow! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Happy ending anyway. I guess when ever you braked or turned it torqued body and chassis enough to do it. Weird but logical. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
