http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Hi all. I'm another new guy just looking for a bunch of people to help me make the transition from gas to diesel as smooth as possible. Am hoping that you guys will help me to put my wife's mind at ease that buying a Duramax was the best first step! Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Hi Frank. Welcome.

You'll love your new diesel truck, and like the other folks said, you'll probably never go back to gas.

Having said that, I'll add this oversimplification: There are basically 2 kinds of owners. The majority (probably) are the "ignorance is bliss" crowd, who just happily drive their trucks with a variable degree of preventive maintenance and service, and seldom if ever have any problem. Then there are the rest of us... who read all about our trucks, every potential problem, every possible add on to help prevent such problems, and we learn about boxes to improve performance, aftermarket parts to improve ride, looks, etc. We spend more money, and I'm not sure if we actually enjoy our trucks more than the "ignorance is bliss" crowd, but this is what we do. It is who we are.

Welcome to "our side." We're a friendly (mostly) crowd with lots of helpful folks ready to answer your questions and suggest ways to spend more money than you have. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Thanks for the warm welcome; am looking forwrd to learning all I can about our new (well, new for us) toy. And a hi to Mike_in_Wisc; Wind Lake is about 20 miles southwest of Milwaukee on Hwy 36. A friend of ours has a small cabin just north of Wautoma on 152. We meet at his place in Oconomowoc and take 16 to 22 passing through Pardeeville on our way north. I'll keep my eye out for your truck when we're in the area. We usually stop at the B&P for a pit stop, lottery tickets, etc. Thanks again to all.

Be careful with this sight. If you learn to much you might need to win one of those lotteries just to pay for the toys that your truck is going to need. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Welcome to the best place to learn about the Duramax.

Welcome. You'll find lots o good information in the Do It Yourself section. There is also a seach feature at the top of the pages. You can type in some key words to a question and more than likely find alot of posts about it already. Change your fuel filter regularly and try and pick a good place to fuel the truck at (places that have a high turnover in diesel, good CLEAN fuel, no water) I was paranoid when I firt started reading the info here, but seem to be settling down now.
Good luck, enjoy, and don't take any crap from any F#*d or Dodge owners (Ford is a bad word for me)

Thanks to all who welcomed me by responding to my first post; I'm looking forward to participating in future discussions on this board. Since I'm new at this, if I make some mistakes in my posting (forum etiquette, wrong category, etc ), I would welcome someone calling me on it and I promise that I won't be offended as this is a learning experience for me. I have always tried to do all of my own maintenance and servicing, and most of the minor repairs, but these newer vehicles with all the electronics etc. are making that more and more difficult. Many thanks to dmaxalliTech for taking the time to share his experience and posting his ideas on a servicing schedule; it sounds like a great place to start. Additionally I'm thinking that I should pick up a service manual, and am leaning toward the GM real deal from Helms, but $135? Is there a less expensive option? Our truck is an '03, so I'm not exactly sure what the prior servicing schedules were and what fluids were used, but I'm leaning to using a synthetic oil, maybe Amsoil, to try to maximize the life of the engine. I believe that there's no substitute for experience, so I'll value highly any sugestions received from this board. Again, many thanks, and I'm looking forward to all the friends I'll make on my new journey!

Black Max, I just got my first diesel first of June and love it.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif My wife is adjusting too. Like everyone else has said you'll read a lot about toys for our new trucks. I've started a wish list that I won't let my wife see though. I'm from Green Bay, so there's a couple newbies from WI. Welcome and read on.

Hi Black Max, I got a 03 in June with 16,000 miles on it. Love the truck and have learned alot reading on the forum. I do have one thing to ask everyone? When I pull my camper I hear a noise that sounds like a fan or blower coming on as the truck goes thru its gears then dies out. This weekend I was pulling it down the interstate, it started doing it off and on at about 70 mph. Is this normal? The out side temp. was 93. The engine and trans temp looked good. At this time the truck is stock. Whats Up!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

if u have ever pulled anything previously with a truck with the wife in board and then pull soemthing in the dmax with her on board...she'll notice the difference. Mine did! Just pulled through some big hills and she was gleaming...well maybe was me and it bounced off the mirrorhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif. Seriously, she noticed the difference and was very pleased. Was a little snippy abut the price but when she got used to the Cadillac-like interior and the rocket ship feeling when you pulling a load up a 6% grade...well u get the picture...oh and u can be sooo relaxed when you get your destination & she's not afraid to drive it either...really does inspire confidence.Edited by: tswartos

My wife loved it when we took our first trip in ours. Pulling our 5er with the 6.0 liter HD I had before the Dmax was a nail biting experience. We would arrive at our destinations exhausted from the stress. With the Dmax we pull like we are on a Sunday drive. It is just plain awesome.

I thought that noise was the turbo coming on! No joke! I'd asked in another thread when the turbo comes on and off but don't recall getting a reponse and forget where I posted the question. I assume now that the turbo is always on?Edited by: donmiller714

Couldn't agree more, pulling my trailer with my old Yukon was work. Now I look forward to the pull and wish we could find a place further away.

The turbo will have a high pitch whine. The cooling fan just makes a loud noise. It will go away after about 40-50 KPH. Not sure what the MPH is. Will do initially on starting out, or when the truck is hot, or working. (sorry my explanations are clear as mud)

I don't hear the high pitch whine (thinking of some kind of motor sound) but definately the high speed fan, coming on sometimes at accelleration and dying out, or when hauling the TT coming on at unusual intervals (sometimes when going uphill, other times just coming on during a straight & level for a while, then dying out).

turn the tunes up and enjoy the ride http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Trust me...compared to driving an undercooled 6.5 TD its doing all the cooling you need.
