: EGT Drop with Exhaust Upgrade

Was pulling a ~8k travel trailer last weekend over the I-8 grade out of San Diego and was seeing EGT's over 1200 with consistency (I hit 1300 briefly  ). There as wind with the Santa Ana's, but do not know how much. I would guess 15 - 20 MPH gusts.

Everything on the truck is stock.

What I do not like is the inability to get on it to pass someone that is much slower in the right lane because by EGT's are already at 1200 or so.

Solution - Exhaust Upgrade!

But will the upgrade to 4" be enough?

How much drop in EGT's are you guys seeing when upgrading to (i) 4" and (ii) 5" exhaust?

I'm considering intake and possibly an Edge in the future. So far the power is sufficient for my 8k trailer, but the EGT's are the issue in stock condition.

Help!

Not sure what truck you have but with 4" MBRP cat-back it didnt lower EGT's. Some say that removing the kitty is the key to lowering EGT's. Haven't gone there yet becuase I like a quite ride (at least in the cab)

I've got the 4" MBRP cool duals. My EGT's dropped considerably with the exhaust. I pull the same trailer but it is never loaded exactly the same, but I have never seen anything over 1200 since the upgrade. I have pulled some pretty heavy stuff over some fairly steep grades(at least steep for around here). I have the Hypertech set on 2. The dual exhaust sounds great and really gets people's attention. I haven't had the in cab drone that some of the others on here have talked about. Just luck I guess.

Load a sig so that we know what truck you have.
I dropped my egt's 200 deg by installing a 4" catless exhaust with a free flowing muffler. But be warned some of the aftermarket exhaust systems can be noisy (in the cab) when towing.

I have found that my exhaust didn't really lower the EGT's, but they seem to cool off way faster than before. I have seen upwards of 1500* pulling my toyhauler, uphill in 30 mph winds, on a 100*+ day. Who knows what they would have been if the cat was still on...

billdow,

Generally you'll see 175 + degrees with a good system, a cat back will get you approx 80% of that as they cats on todays trucks actually flow pretty good as compared to those of just a few years ago. If you have any exhaust questions call us we have all the MBRP and AFE systems in stock and will be glad to help you.
