Ok guys need input.... I have 04 lb7 edge HOT. Reading some posts on here about problems above 90hp gains. Running at 150hp i'm well over that. Wondering if my trany needs upgrades? WHAT UPGRADES are out there and what would you recomend? A shift kit? Or what? Costs? Thanks!! JP

If you're running well over 90 hp above stock...you'll be forced to upgrade your tranny sooner rather than later. Lots of upgrade options out there. Depends on what other mods you want to do. Some have gotten by with a TransGo kit. Myself..."Limped" my tranny twice in fifth gear and I ended up with a full upgrade...Suncoast internals, TransGo and triple disk torque convertor.

I've run my Quadzilla Stealth set on 190 hp with my LP injection @ 50 hp...and the tranny never misses a beat.

Like I said....depends on how far you want to push the engine upgrades....but , the stock Allison will let you know pretty quickly. A fully upgraded Allison is a Beautiful thing!!! I would recommend it highly!

Good Luck,

Wayne

Do a search on suncoast or ats. From the reading I've been doing their really is no real inexpensive way to do it.

if your going to do the trans, dont bother till its toast, imho limping becomes easier to do after the first time, but still it takes alot to totaly screw yourself.

Exactly. Keep in mind that you're playing with fire (don't worry I am too) and don't be torqued off when it goes bad cuz you know it was coming. In the mean time keep saving up the money to get it done right the first time.

I like Ari's spirit ):h :grd: and smoke em if ya got em ):h Might ask Dave about how fun it is to get a truck on a trailer with no first gear though ;) ):h

If all you ever want to do is run a hot juice or that level a transgo and a converter will do you fine if you start with deccent clutches ;) If you have been running the hot juice your chances of having deccent clutches in your trans are pretty limited so minimum you are going to be replacing em with stockers anywho......

Since your juice is pulling out a ton of power it will feel like a whole new truck and an animal if you go with a upgraded trans and can use all the power of the hot juice

What you do in terms of trans depends on what you want to do with the truck and feel you may do in the future. Better to overbuild than underbuild and decide you want to run more power and be in the same boat again...

In past six months or so i have been doing a lot of looking and a lot of playing around with numbers and this is my two cents. Chances are you will eventually out grow your edge its just kid of the way it goes. if you are going to open up your tranny i would just go with a Suncoast stage four or something comparable by ATS and call it good. Then when you out grow your edge you can sell it and pic up EFI live and go nuts.

Ok wow, thanks for the input! This now sparks a few more questions. Costs on these upgrades? And what is Limp mode?

Sandman

Limp mode....The transmission senses slippage in fifth gear...from too much torque(more than stock) the tranny slips out of gear and locks itself in third gear . It really is a freaky thing....had to pull over, shut the truck down and restart. The net effect of the slippage...you start burning the frictions and steels.....clutches. It becomes easier and easier for the tranny to slip until you start losing gears. I wanted to be able to drive my truck to the tranny shop....so I decided to be proactive and get it fixed before I got stranded somewhere. The decision of when to get yours fixed is up to you....but power adders are addictive....most likely you'll be looking to get more power out of your rig...which means...you'll have to upgrade your tranny.

Cost? You'll have to check the diffeent manufacturers for recent prices. I think my parts from Suncoast were @ $2300 plus a core charge on my stock convertor. Labor was about $2000. If I had it to do all over again...I'd just pop for the stage 5.....they send a ready to go...upgraded tranny and torque convertor....all you need is somebody to install it and send yours back.

Just my two cents worth....take it for what it's worth,

Good Luck,

Wayne

Just out of curiosity how much SHOULD it cost. I am kind of in the same boat, I need a tranny but need to know how much saving up i need to do.

I think it is anywhere from $1600 on up(also some shop charges..disposal of old tranny fluid etc.)...plus parts obviously. Guess you can check around. I know Eric....Merchant Automotive does the work...don't know what he charges...but I know his work is first rate. The tranny has to be essentially taken fully apart....so it's a fair amount of work.

That's why....for me....If I had it to do over again, I'd order the stage five SunCoast....they've done all the work and the new tranny just has to be installed and your old one shipped back to Florida.

It ain't cheap....but if you want to play (make big power) you're gonna pay. I can only say an upgraded Allison is a beautiful thing. They shift fast with only a hint of firmness and never miss a beat!! You really have to experience it to believe it.

Good Luck,

Wayne

Yep...See...Mike L. has given you the updated labor cost....mine was done a couple of years ago. Labor of 1300 to 1500.

Trust the figures that Mike L. gives you....he's an expert on the upgrades...it's his business and he knows what he's talking about. If you can have him do the upgrades.....you'd be having one of the best!!

Mike what's the net difference between upgrading to SCIV as compared to the replacement SCV? Talking a very low mileage non limped trans.

Every shop's labor charge will differ based on their experience (if they're unfamiliar they'll probably pad the estimate so they don't shoot themselves in the foot). Also, different regions are going to reflect different hourly rates. You'll essentially be out the same $$$ whether you buy a kit & have it built or order a full trans & pay for install. You're just paying one company or another for their build time.

Sure you can wait until you toast your trans, just hope you're not on the highway in another state with the kids in the back seat... You can't really plan a failure or where you may be when one occurs. Word to the wise is it rarely happens in your driveway just before a long weekend when you have nothing planned, or in the tranny shop's parking lot... MY $.02

I probably paid more since I was the first Allison upgrade for the shop I went to....and it was a couple of years ago. Shops that do a fair amount of upgrades probably reduce the labor charge since they can do them quicker.

But that isn't the point for me....it's having the upgraded tranny. There is nothing like it in the world...period! I'd have Eric or Mike L. or even Suncoast do the work.....but it's worth every cent...if you want to seriously increase HP and torque...it is a fact of life.
