My oil plug has a persistant drip. Is this common? The gasket looks fine, and last change I thought it just needed cleaned up for a better seal, but still.... drip, drip drip... Maybe some teflon tape on the threads, or would that be a bad idea? Or do they all just drip a little. Not too big a deal, but it bugs me to have those spots on my garage floor.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif

Buy the fumoto valve and you will get a FREE gasket with it.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Thanks, I can't believe the copper gasket is bad already, but if this isn't a common problem, apprantly it must be so. I think I like the fumoto valve idea best. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

New copper gaskets make a great sealing surface for some applications. They are used in piston engine aircraft for the sparkplugs. Downside is they work harden quickly, especially when exposed to continued heat/cool cycles like aircraft engine cylinder heads.

So on the aircraft, we install new ones each time the plugs are pulled. The other option which isn't really practical for drain plugs, is to anneal them between uses.

The Fumoto is the way to go, I'm glad I found out about them here.

Dumb question?

Did you tighten the drain plug enough?
Specs call for 62 Ft lbs.

I had the same problem and found that I didn't tighten the plug enough. (59 ft. lbs. = drip drip drip)

Not entirely on-topic, but I find it insulting that they charge over 3 bucks for a little copper washer.Edited by: Wayne Dohnal
