: Which D-max's to stay away from?
dieseldreamer 10-29-2006, 10:25 PM Hi I will be in the market for a Dmax in the spring to replace my 6.0L gasser. I do landscaping so i pull anywhere from 3-12k#'s regularly. I also like to play around on the streets and bring it to the track...
I have been told by multiple people to stay the hell away from 01-02 becuase they are junk (injector issues???) and the dealers wont even touch them as far as trade ins and stuff goes. Now i also heard the 03's were good but i am now reading of yet more injector issues! 03 will most likely be the most i can afford.
I do plan on modifying it, plans are tranny upgrades, EFILive, intake/exhaust and n20. as well as the front end upgrades for launchs & racing. possibly one day a turbo upgrade and also thinking of a moderate lift (4-6")
I have seen some good deals on low mile 01 n 02's but these rumors scared the bajesus out of me. Anyone wanna inform me on the problems and things to look out for?
gunslinger 10-29-2006, 10:42 PM I don't know what to say about the 01-02 diesels . I have purchased an 01 d-max only a few days ago an bought it with what I believe is this injector issue. I will tell you that my 03 has 68000 on it with only regular maintaince and fuel filters. My 06 has just turned 18000 miles with no problems either. I use them to haul bobcats and mini-excavators regularly. 12,000-14,000# loads all the time and love them.
TOTHEMAX! 10-29-2006, 11:30 PM as far as injectors go the 01-03 just got upgraded to 7 year 200k mile warrenty. they have had problems with injectors but i wouldnt worry too much about it or anything else. the lb7 motor came in the 01-03 so i dont know why the dealer wouldnt "touch" a 01,02 for a trade in. if i was you i would buy the lowest mileage 01-03 dmax you can find and not look back.

dieseldreamer 10-30-2006, 12:18 AM say if you were to upgrade to aftermarket injectors.... say when there time comes, what kind of gains do they give you and what could i expect to pay.. Is that the only issue with these motors?
ssm58 10-30-2006, 07:01 AM MY 02 has about 140k onit and it has beenpretty much trouble free, besides a few minor issues, not engine probs.. love it, would like another if I COULD AFFORD IT.(TO BUILD FOR PLAY)

All nasty rumers started by those on the dark side.):h
I heard that the heads warped on a regular basis, so I looked at Fords, Then my dad bought a D/A. I drove his truck a couple of times, and I couldn't resist. Best decision I ever made, and I have a 200k mi warranty on the only part that has ever been questionable on this truck. If you ask me, it's a no brainer. Get any D/A, and you won't regret it.
shuffman 10-30-2006, 10:31 AM Well, my '02 has 86,000 klms (50K + miles) on it and so far there has been not one issue with my Dmax. This past summer it pulled our 11K # 5th wheel trailer up the Dempster hwy (500 miles one way of gravel) to Inuvik, NWT, Canada and then back down the same route and on to a great tour of Alaska before returning home to Vancouver Island, BC. All totalled the trip was 12,500 klms (7500 miles). No issues at all and have had the truck now since July of '03. I added a pre-oem Racor fuel filter which I changeout regularly and I use Stanadyne's "World Blend" fuel additive faithfully. This diesel is a "PULLIN' BEAST" and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another one when the time comes. Trouble is, there's to much service left in this one. Good luck........................SWH...:grd:
howard_m18 10-30-2006, 10:47 AM As you see from my signiture, I bought mine on Ebay. (2002 2500 C/C/ D/A) The BEST & SAFEST way to look at ANY truck is to get the vin# & run it in the "VIN # REQUEST" area on this site. I checked the vin# on the truck that I bought & found out that the injectors had been replaced at 83K. I figured that since the BIGGESTproblem was fixed, I ended up buying it & flew down to Tx. They allowed me to take it for a long spin (25 miles) & we sat down & did the paperwork. It now has 116K & no regrets whatsoever!!! Howard
SS Predator 10-30-2006, 10:58 AM 02 Duramax, 11,678hrs on the motor. 8 injectors @3,000hrs. no grief since.
MaxRock 10-30-2006, 11:24 AM I have an '02 DMax / ZF 6 speed with over 160k trouble free miles. The engine has not had a wrench on it except for filter changes. This is the most awesome truck that I have ever owned. I pull my 33' 5th wheel which weighs in at 11.5k pounds. I love this truck and hope it lasts another 200-300k miles as the General decided to quit offering manual transmissions!
Oh...did I say this is one great truck!!!!
MaxRock
astieg 10-30-2006, 02:23 PM I have had mine for only 8 months, bought it with 23k on it now at 36k. the only problem that I have is those damn Censored tyres, on my second set already... Must be an issue with that fly by wire gas pedal.. .. I'm gonna have to get permission from the wife to get that fixed.. . HEE HEE HEE suncoast IV from Mike L. that will fix it..:exactly: ... Have Fun..... and leave rubber on the road eveywhere):h ...........
As far as dealers not wanting to touch 01's and 02's is completely false. Every dealer I have talked to (a few I know fairly well) talks about how they wish they could get their hands on more used D-Max's because of the demand people have for them. Don't let the injector issue turn you away from an '01-02's. Believe me, 6.0 Ford guys wish injectors were the only problems they had.
samfraser 10-30-2006, 02:48 PM As of now with the 04's injector problems and GM not having an extended plan on them, I would go with the 01-03, 04.5-07
Duramaxdude03 10-30-2006, 06:15 PM imo i heard 04's are having some heating promblems but if you live up north you will not have to worry about
PapaSmurf 10-30-2006, 07:13 PM My 01 is just getting broke in good @ almost 250,000 miles. Had it into the dealership 2 weeks ago to get a problem fixed ( turned out to be loose wire ) they not only want my truck in a trade in, but offered me $15000 for it CASH. It's paid off and so as long as it looks and runs good I'll keep it.:ro)
GMCOWBOY 10-30-2006, 07:16 PM I have a 01 with 82 thousand miles and have had no problems yet. i am running propane, edge, and a dual boost pump. However i have been looking at a new hd and all of the dealership had nothing good to say about the 07, all of the manufactures are having a hard time keeping egt's down do to the new emision laws as well as the new fuel.

I have an 02 and really like it. I worked parts in Gm dealerships from 96 to march 04 and can't say that I saw a great deal of bad injectors. I now sell tools so am still around the auto industry. I know the local GM dealer has put two sets in one particular 3500 and seem to think it is a fuel qual issue. It is a hot shot trk with a huge (homemade) tank in the back it got its 1st set at 255k and its 2nd at 335. Even though parts warr is only good for 12/12 Gm\ was standing 1/2 of the 2nd set.
I feel they have really stepped to the pump by increasing the warranty to 200k on these injectors. In my mind it comes back to buy clean fuel keep it clean.
Fredrick 10-30-2006, 08:14 PM I would also not be shy about buying a 01-03 either, as the fuel injector issue is pretty much covered by GM. The front ends look good too! My only other option to think about would be if you want to upgrade to factory Nav and Amp upgrades. The electrical changed in 03. Good luck.
TheBac 10-30-2006, 08:19 PM I don't really think you can go wrong with an 01-04 LB7. I've had two, with no trouble from either one.
BullydogPowered 10-30-2006, 08:36 PM which ones to stay away from? the ones on this site cuz most arent stock:lol:
Dr_goodwrench66 10-30-2006, 09:41 PM Get one that suits your needs. You will not be disappointed with any engine. The LB7 in known for injectors and some 01's are known for headgaskets...LLY's overheat, and have injector wiring issues, and the LBZ's have EGR issues, while early ones have had glow plug issues. Point is, they all have problems! I work on them daily and thier isn't one that is completely trouble free! Get what you want or can afford! You will be happy with any one...Just my .02
TheBac 10-30-2006, 09:43 PM Excellent post, goodwrench!!!
dieseldreamer 10-30-2006, 10:16 PM Ok, I know my dads friend has an 03 I believe and he must have got a lemon becuase his dealership wont trade it in and since he got it he has been having tonnes of problems.. After reading the 20-something posts im convinced and confident in any lb7.
QUESTION: Does this 200000 mile warranty cover second owners? or is this only if you bought the truck new.. This is a big factor to.. how much does it cost if it wasnt warranted? i believe my unlce said he got a deal when changing his in his older cummins. installed was like 1600cdn and thats not even a v8!
TheBac 10-30-2006, 10:25 PM The warranty covers the injectors to 200,000 miles or 7 years....irregardless of who owns the truck.
I wouldn't want to estimate what an injector job actually costs.

I was told by the local dealer that the job on the 3500 at 255k cost $4500
manwell 10-31-2006, 12:17 AM I have an 01 @120,000. the injectors went out on a road trip to Biloxi, miss.
The service team at Ryan Chevy, in west monroe,La sent the $6000.00 bill
to the boys who built it! PRAISE GOD!
TwoFast4Lv 10-31-2006, 01:45 AM After many years of wanting one We finaly got one. A GMC SLT CCSB. Exactly what I wanted! I wanted a very comfortable tow rig. I have borred a few truck this year to get a feel for them and decided I wanted a 2500HD mainly for the bigger brakes and axles.
By Dumb luck one of my friends at the local ford dealer found this one hidden on the lot for me ;) I was not looking to buy but drove it home and have had a snile on my face every since!
Only known issues (and they are common to all) is a bad extending mirror and a speedo that dies unexpectedly.
I WAS worried about the injectors until I saw the new warranty plan from GM. Even at that I found a complete injector set with lines and gaskets for $1,000 today and a set of new injectors for under $400. I started wrenching on Big rigs when I was 14 so I ain't scared of installing them ;)
Find one you like at a price you can live with and enjoy it!

Where'd you find them for that price? Vinny's Pawn Shop? Guy on the corner called over to you and said, "Psst...hey buddy, want to buy a set of injectors cheap?"
From what I understood, the injectors were $400 a piece. I think you may also want to go buy a Lotto ticket with that luck going for you.

First post here, could you provide a link to the VIN check on this site....I can't seem to find it.
Thanks !

MR BILL 10-31-2006, 02:58 PM what are the symptoms when the injectors start going bad?
