: Westin step bars, chrome or black?

I believe I will go with a set of Westins (lots of good feedback here), but not sure if should go with chrome or black p/c. Seems the black may fade or discolor over time. Anyone had this problem with the black tubes, or whish they'd gone chrome instead?

Thanks

I have the black ones now and had chrome before. These require more maintenance to keep looking nice (waxing) and show a few scuff marks around the pads that don't come out with just waxing.

I'd say the chrome ones would get the nod ahead of black if money isn't a question.

Kartattack,
That's what I was thinking, I've got 2 boys, so I suspect the chrome will stand up a lot better! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Thanks.

Depends on the color of the truck.

In your case, I think the black would look cheap on the silver. The chrome would set it off. JMHO.

I know guys who have had the black and they will rust up quick after they get a chip in them.

Some of them have had Line-X sprayed on them and it looks OK. One guy did it the color of his truck (RED) at the same time they did the bed. It really looked sharp!

GregJ,

I've had black and chrome and really don't recommend either. Both scratch easily and the chrome finish didn't last. I went with stainless steel on my current truck and have been extremely satisfied. They've been on the truck a year and still look brand new. I got them from an ebay retailer for what my local truck accessory dealer wanted for black.

My two cents.....

I have the Westin Chrome Plated Stainless. I've only had them for 1 season, but so far they're great.

I had the Black p/c stainless Westins on my old truck. Looked great... for a while, then the scratches start to show and they always look dirty (dust on black) Now I have my new truck and ordered the chrome stainless, a bit more, but lower maintenance and since they are stainless steel, rust is not an issue.

just 2 more cents....

Found this on ebay for Westin Platinums, seems like a decent price, especially since a local dealer wants $653 a set.

I'm sure that if you could ask everyone, every manufacturer of bars would get votes. I've been digging for answers to the same questions about the bars, and I made a choice based on what I've learned here, and some additional digging elsewhere. I tend to agree with GTNBham and gearhead that stainless is the only way to go. I ordered a set of Nasta's for these reasons: (1) highly polished stainless tubes should require minimal maintanence-no paint to chip or chrome to peel (2) ALL mounting hardware is stainless as well-should eliminate rusting brackets and bolts (3) extensive factory testing shows no damage from salt and no yellowing of the tubes with age (4) lifetime warranty for original owner covers EVERYTHING including brackets and bolts (5) very competitive price. I should have them in a week and only time will tell if I spent my money wisely!

Black Max,
Where did you order your's? They seem to set out a little more than the Westins, maybe easier to get in/out.

Thanks

This seems like a good price for a set of polished s/s Nasta's, $339 incl shipping.

If I can add my 2 cents...I used to have '94 model Rodeo with Black Nerf Bars and Brush guard. It was the best looking I've ever seen. There was some hazing of the paint, but I just kept it rubbed down with tire dressing most of the time. Since I live in the south we don't have too much of a rusting problem, so a fresh coat of black paint every now and then takes care of the problem more often than not. I plan to put black Westin's on my beast!

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gifApologies to gregj; I missed your reply; PM next time. I just got the Nasta's yesterday........they were backordered almost a month. This is the first set of bars I've had, but I've gotta say, they look great. They are the polished stainless w/all stainless mounting hardware. The installation was fast and painless and everything fit. Have to find a good polish for stainless. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you get Black, get the Black over stainless tubes..........

The powder coating is not in my opinion of the highest quality and scratches easily.

I am on my third set of WARRANTIED Westin'S Black over regular steel.

I wish I had gotten Chrome over stainless.....but have left them off for now.

Undecided if I am putting them back on or not.

How about the Nerf bars that you can get from GM, when you order a Silverado or Sierra, does anyone know if there worth the price, or would it be better to order truck without the ones GM supplys, and just buy a good set of after markets ones like Westins or Lund?.
