well as you know i bought a 03 gmc with the lb7 duramax and 59250 miles on it. there is a squeal noise at idle. i am thinking its just the belt as it is glazed pretty bad. could that be the problem and if so should i also replace the tensioner and idler at the same time or those still ok for now? any help be much appreciated. thanks:ro)

I bought a 02 duramax acouple of months ago and it had a terrible squeal at idle when it was cold ,but wasn't to bad when warmed up,it drove me nuts,so I did a search on this site and found quite a few remedies for the squeal noise,I tried several of them ,but the one that worked was replacing the serpentine belt with a GOODYEAR GATORBACK belt ,replaced it 2 weeks ago and have had ZERO squeal noise since, according to what I have read on here from other members the gatorback is the way to go nothing else will do,I know it worked for me.

I have the same problem..

new tensioner and 1 of the idler pullys.. I am going to try the other idler pully cause its cheap.. already did a belt.. it was a factory belt though...

last thing on the list is the alt..

My idler squeaks a little in cold weather (not at all in the summer) before it warms up, then it's fine. It's a different sound than a belt squeak though.

My idler pulley went bad purty quick after buying my '01 new. Had it replaced and all was well until a month or so ago, the squeak came back. Took it in for service and they told me that it wasn't the pulley but the belt, sooo they replaced the belt no squeak for a month now. So far so good. My belt was 5 years old, but only 43K miles. IT can be the belt.

Did yours start doing it only in cold weather? If it gets below 50 deg mine will do it on start up, then it goes away after warmed up. I assumed it to be the idler because it doesn't sound like a belt squeak to me. It's not a constant squeak, but more of a rythmic chirp. Is this the same as what yours is doing? Maybe it's my belt.

mine could of been described more as a ryhmic chirp than a squeal Iwould say, and yes it was much more noticeable in cold damp weather.

when my water pump went out it started seeping on the belt, causing it to slip and chirp, then the pump went out and the squealed like a pig, check to see if there is any seepage around the water pump shaft.

I had a squeek problem with my '02 LB7 at about 10k - took it to the dealer. They found a TSB for a "misalignment of the belt and pulleys" at the factory, that they were covering. Worked great and was free.

Now at 52k, the squeek is back. Probably just change it out myself. Seems a little early on a belt.

I had the dealer change my belt 3 times and it still squeaks.. once at about 20,000, 36,000 now i have 62,000 and it squeaks and has been squeaking every morning when its cold or damp. I will be going to the Gator belt very soon.

I had the same problem, and my tensioner was worn and bouncing around a bit, so I replaced it to notice another noise. I have a squeal only when the fan or ac is on. If it turn it off I can hear it stop and then start again when I turn the ac or fan back on. Any ideas?

Im not sure if this is your problem, but my truck was throwing the belt off the tesioner evertime i hit high rpms. So i replaced the tesioner with a car quest tesioner. Still threw it off, come to find out my bearing was bad in my fan clutch, so i replaced it and it still threw the belt off. I put the stock gm tesioner back on and it works fine. If your going to buy a tensioner i would reccomend buying one from gm, as aftermarkets obviously are cheaper for a reason.

Well I'll tell ya, My squeal came at 38,000 miles and took it to the dealer they said it's the alt, ??? so I've driven since It does sueal in the am when it's cold and then it's gone after a few min. I looked myself and it does squek around the alt but, 102,000 miles and still going

Been dealing with cold start squeal from the beginning. Dealer replaced idler pullies and tensioner under warranty, no help. Replaced belt with another OEM, no help. Read about the gator belt at the dieselplace, bought one, put it on and problem solved. Too bad I didn't know about the gator 92K miles ago.
