Picked up a fuel filter for the 96 K3500 I bought a couple months back, so here is my question. Is there a prime pump anywhere on the system? Buddy at work said he worked on a 3/4 ton 6.5 and after changing the filter they just cranked it til it started. That sounds like a bad idea. Anybody got any pointers for me?

I think that a '96 should have a primer relay so you just have to turn on the key to run the pump. The bleeder in on top of the filter.

If it doesn't run the pump when you turn the key to run, then put the transmission in drive and turn the key to the start position. It should run the pump.

Another thing to do it open the bleeder on the old filter before removal and the water drain valve.(mounted near the water thermostats) Put the hose in a container and blow air into the bleeder port on the filter. (air compressor works good). Keep blowing until you get air out of the drain hose. This way the filter bowl will be empty and you don't get and unfiltered fuel in the lines past the filter.

I have a '96 K1500. I change the fuel filter once per year.

I just remove the old filter and install the new. No priming required.

However, I read on this forum, you should clean out the filter reservoir every five yrs or so.

Don't forget to make sure the plastic screen stays in the bowl it sometimes gets stuck in the old filter., should always clean bowl IMO with every filt change, also get turkey baser & drain residual fuel from bottom of bowl before pulling filt.
