: Heavy smoke....engine unmodified
Stringer 07-06-2004, 09:10 PM Truck has been smoking more and more as of late. Fuel mileage has gradually decreased also. I replaced the fuel filter and air filter for a FRAM Air Hog last night, and put good fuel with stanadyne in also. Had no effect on the smoke issue. What should I look at next? I'm hoping it's nothing serious, but we'll just have to wait and see. Oh yeah, truck has 44k miles.
Victory Red 07-06-2004, 09:24 PM Stringer,
What color of smoke white or black? When my injectors were on the downslide my mileage dropped and black smoke under heavy acceleration was similiar to running a box, albeit not nearly as heavy. A drop in fuel mileage, rough idle, white smoke at idle when warmed up are all signs.
Best thing you can do is either take it in for a test from the dealer stating that it's smoking more, or find a friend with a OBDII reader.
Stringer 07-06-2004, 09:50 PM Victory Red, its black smoke under moderate to heavy acceleration. I haven't noticed any white smoke, though. Noticed that we received a letter about injector issues concerning this truck, so I'll take it in and get it looked at. I beleive that the injectors will be replaced under an extended warranty, at least thats what I understand from that letter.

Maybe one of your injectors is not putting in any fuel, hence the increase in mileage.
Max Owner 07-07-2004, 10:05 PM My 02 will blow some black smoke under heavy acceleration with my trailer on. Not a black cloud though.
Stringer 07-07-2004, 11:34 PM Max Owner- This one will out smoke my IDI Ford unloaded, and I have my pump tweaked a little. I also noticed some harder starting in the mornings, accompanied by a large puff of blue smoke. This is at temps around 50.
Diesel_4_me 07-08-2004, 01:12 PM ok..
My little head tells me that the turbocharger may be at fault...
Blue smoke= oil? Maybe the turbo is starved of oil.. and got damaged and its smoking the first load of oil that comes in to lube it up.. then works ok?
Too much smoke= not enough boost.. so running rich?
My noob theory anyway

WYO_DMAX 07-08-2004, 01:23 PM That happened to my brother's pickup, to the point it almost wouldn't run. He took it to the dealer and the K&N filter was so dirty it wasn't getting enough air, and apparently causing the smoke. Cleaned the air filter and it runs like a charm with no smoke.
Max Owner 07-08-2004, 03:40 PM Keep us informed Stringer. Mine smoked a little during the late winter, on start up. Not very cold either. Seemed to go way on its own. My theory was I added too much additive. Just a guess though.
onesmokindmax04 07-09-2004, 03:57 PM I took my truck in this week becouse it is blowin out black smoke. most of the time its under heavy acceleration. The guy at the dealer said it will smoke becouse its a diesel. daler see what they say.
Victory Red 07-09-2004, 09:49 PM Some black smoke is normal. I have brand new injectors(well around 1 month old and 3500 miles on them). Under a heavy accel with no box installed I will blow smoke, but more of a light brown and not so much that it looks like more than a haze.
When my injectors were failing, a heavy accel without a box plugged in again looked like I did. Heavy black smoke so much that you couldn't see through it out your mirror.
onesmokindmax04 07-09-2004, 10:10 PM I have noticed when my truck black smokes if its real humid out it will smoke hard. to day it was cooler out and could barely smokin.
Stringer 07-10-2004, 02:01 AM Takin it in tomorrow for a preliminary check at a reputable diesel shop. I know the owner very well, and he beleives the blue smoke is turbo related, but thinks diesel fuel somehow got into the crankcase and caused the damage. He is not sure how or when, but thats what he is leaning towards. I have never seen the dipstick read above the full mark at all, so who knows. I will report back any and all findings.

These were the exact symptoms I had on my '02. I took it to the dealer and three injectors were bad. All eight were replaced under the extended injector warranty. My truck now runs better than ever.
Stringer 07-17-2004, 11:07 PM Alright, after some long talks with the shop manager in town, they are replacing all 8. They said they found 2 bad ones, and only wanted to replace the bad ones. I, of course, said no way, and went round and round with the guy. Finally agreed to it, now have to wait a week and half to get it fixed. No problems with turbocharger, thank god.
Max Owner 07-19-2004, 12:34 AM Cool. Happy "Injectoring" to you.
Good luck with the repairs.
