Friends-

I've been lurking here for a while. I'm thinking about ordering a Duramax; but it will be my first diesel and I don't know much.

I've seen the reccomended maint list. I understand merit of extra fuel filtration and additives. One day I may throw in a power mod.

Anything else I should know? I'm hoping the truck manual has the info I need; but was hoping to read it before purchase.

Any 'stupid' stuff I need to know? How about leaving the engine running?; i.e., running into the store for 5 minutes, what should I do? Use a remote start or some other form of override? How does all that work?

Still things I'm not certain about, but I also don't know the terminology or how to word the questions. I'll leave it at this and see what comes along.

Thanks guys.

Sounds like you have a real good sense and handle on impending ownership ...

New age Diesel have come along way so there really isn't a large list of do's and dont's ...

Make sure you double check the pump when fueling ... It is best as with a gasser it is best to get any vehicle up to full operating temp ... Idling isn't a problem but while breaking in I wouldn't recommend extensive idle time ...

I have always broken in my vehicles the way I intend on driving them ... For the first 500/1000 miles I vary my speed and no WOT pulls and long idle times ...

Others will add and good luck ...

Welcome to the forum, do you have your wallet handy?

Just kidding, there are way too many neat things to do with your new truck, should you get it, that are covered here.

I agree with Mac, drive it like you intend to except for the WOT stuff and the speed restriction listed in the owner's manual is for the rear end to break in, it can get pretty hot doing that so that's why it's there.

Freakboy....my first Diesel as well as first 3/4 ton, I'm a mech engr and lifelong gear head and believe in old school stuff like changing all fluids and filters after a few hundred breakin miles and I’ve never worn out an engine of ANY type from motorcycle, tractor, German, Italian, Jap, American you name it. Replaced worn bits, yes, rebuilt some that had been faithful and true enough to deserve it ,I've read as much as can find here doing research on maint, filters, shocks, pre lube sys, exhaust, etc....still in process of selecting all of the above to meet my needs. Seems a very few products do not perform as advertised most do, so "bang for the buck" of what works is my intended path for moderate HP, torque, effeciency, and longevity gains
