I was informed by the local dealer that they could only diagnois the allison for shifting problems,if repairs are needed, the unit needed to go to the nearest allison dealer that is about 75 miles away, and being the only allison dealer in the area they are the most indifferent people I have ever dealt with, I had to send work to them when I was in service at a heavy Ford dealership before they sold to freightliner. This is not the place to send someones pickup when major fleet customers are after money making units. Has anyone else been informed of this by a dealer or is the dealer trying to avoid working on the allison? I told the service writer I bouight a chevy because the dealer is close for repairs if needed. thanks Doug

Far as I know only a GM dealer can work on our trucks, local allison guy here won't touch a pickup. I was told allison sold the trans to GM with no warranty, any warranty comes from GM.

Thank you I also sent the question to chevy in case the dealer just did not want to work on the transmisson or they do not have the hardware or certifed tech to do repairs. for the record the dealer was Mc gee in middleboro ma a medium duty dealer as well. Doug

The dealer is supposed to diagnose and repair what they sell. They can refer to Service bulletin #1853081. The bulletin outlines the training courses and specialty tools the dealer will need to purchase. These units have been sold since 2001, about a year afterwards the dealers were authorized to perform all warranty repair.

For the medium-duty vehicles, Allison covers the warranty not GM. Those units that need repair are sent to an Allison approved distributor.

For the pick-ups, GM covers the warranty. The dealership can do the work themselves providing they have the tools and the training, but some will send them out for repairs. Looks like yours is the latter.
