The 40 amp fuse supplies 12dc to the trailer through the pigtail, normaly used to charge the onboard trailer battery(ies)

To add to waht idahofox said, it is needed if you want to charge your camper battery while your driving.

I just got my 04 and installed my Prodigy controller. In the instructions on the pigtail supplied by GM it says you only need the 40amp fuse if you do not have the auxilliary battery option, I assume that since I have two batteries that I have the auxilliary battery option.

also when I looked in the fuse box there was a big sticker across the portion of the fuses where the fuse is supposed to go.

My controller works great but I am not sure about the charging part.

The instructions on my harness that came in the glove compartment said if you have the optional trailer package, the forty amp fuse is not needed. I put mine in the slot to power the post under the fuse box cover under the hood. Did this on my 99 to power my amps.
