This post is a follow on to one that I made to 2500HD and 3500 trucks forum re: premature brake wear.

Truck has 33K miles and appears to have premature brake wear. A closer analysis reveals that the rear rotors are in worse shape than the fronts, right rear scored significantly. Additionally, the right passenger side front and rear rotors have a larger pad swept area than do the ones on the drivers side. The difference being approx.1/4" to 5/16" more on the right side. My take is that the rears are getting more application than fronts and the both wheels right side have more application than the drivers side. Never had a vehicle do this.

My approach is to take to dealer for examination and documentation.First question: Is there a proportioning valve that sets relative braking application front vs. rear and side to side? Second question could the parking brake be a culprit in the amount and seeming premature brake wear...Have you had any similar experiences and are there any service notifications re: problems of this sort....Lastly, I guess most importantly, what might the warranty implications be on a problem of this type. I understand that brakes are wear items....however if a defect of another sort is causal (eg proportioning valve/ parking brake adjust etc)...how is that looked at warranty wise.

Your observations and conmmentary are appreciated!!

Thanks Richard

I have never seen this problem, but here is a bulletin that might apply.

Condition

Some customers and dealers may comment on accelerated rear brake wear on some of the above listed vehicles. This condition occurs mainly on the right rear inboard brake pads and on vehicles that are exposed to extensive off-paved roads.

Correction

Install a mud flap forward of each rear wheel using the following procedure. Installation of these mud flaps and following the recommended off-road driving information provided in the vehicle's Owner's Manual should greatly reduce the possibility of accelerated rear brake component wear.Edited by: GMCSID
