Well, after many months of it sitting in the garage, I finally installed my Nicktane this weekend. Installation was not difficult, but I re-did things several times to get it the way I wanted it, so it took quite awhile before it was completed.
I installed the bracket 'backwards' with the rock guard facing the rear wheel. This necessitated some pretty large radii in the fuel lines and I ended up having to buy another 5 foot section to get it routed like I wanted. I never dropped the driveshaft nor did I loosen the exhaust. I guess all those years working on aircraft finally came in handy as I used the braille method through the bent down shield.
I prefilled the filter and fired it up. It never died and a 3 mile trip went fine. It might be my imagination, but it seems like it idles better/quieter now.
So if you are concerned about the element being exposed to road debris, it is possible to install it backwards from what Nick intended. Just make sure you have extra 7/16" fuel line handy. I was mid-install and went to a half dozen parts stores before I found a NAPA that had some in that size.
On edit: The filter still hangs down about 1/2" below the guard portion of the bracket. I will probably drill a couple of holes in it and install a small piece of rubber or plastic to hang down just a bit farther for additional protection.
I also didn't have enough spiral wrap to cover all of the line like I wanted so I went to Autozone and bought some of that split convoluted tubing used for harnesses. It works fine and 3/4" covers the 7/16" fuel line perfectly. I'll post pics if anyone is interested.Edited by: Kartattack
