: Woo Hoo!! Edge, here I come!
corona 07-04-2004, 01:00 PM OK Gang,
I have a new '04 CC LLY, and finally got the approval from the boss (read wife) to spend the dollars on the Edge juice with Attitude!
Obviously I missed out on the June group buy. So - where is everyone buying theirs? Who's got the best price?
I'm concerned about installing the Pyro probe myself. I think I can handle the Edge install (2 plugs, even I can do that) but drilling and tapping the pyro scares me. Whats the easiest way to get it installed? I've already checked a local shop, and they'll charge me about $150 to install it.
TheBac 07-04-2004, 02:04 PM You too, huh? What'd ya have to bribe her with? Heh heh heh http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
As for price, you gotta call the vendors to see about "special" pricing, if you know what I mean.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
The "Hoot Method" is still in DIY...look at preturbo thermocouple install. It's pretty slick. Just TAKE YOUR TIME!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

bub-baloo 07-04-2004, 05:25 PM Corrona,
I just did mine about a week ago and I can tell you it's way easyer than you think. It's just intimidating to get started. Don't be afraid to do it yourself. Read HOOT' install instructions before hand(you might even print them out) and go slow.
I got my Juice/Attitude brand new, newest versions off eBay for $600.00 there are deals out there if you look.Edited by: bub-baloo

I too used "Hoot's" method for the install. Like everybody says just go slow, get all the required tools beforehand, and take your time. The manifold is not as thick as one might think, so with a new drill you will penetrate the cast iron very quickly. Be sure to have the engine running when you drill and tap the hole. I also used grease on the drill bit and tap to catch as many of the shavings as possible. You will be able to do with no problem, $150.00 for this is way out of line...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Max Owner 07-05-2004, 10:47 PM Corona, for the tapping, twist until you START to feel pressure, then back off 2-3 turns. KEEP doing this. It will be slow. But should prevent breaking a tap. Start with a new, good quality tap. Use tapping fluid (for lubrication) Use the starter tap.
tromplaw 07-07-2004, 03:11 PM At the risk of sounding stupid rather than blowing up 04.5 DMax, What is HOOT? Thanx, TLT

Max Owner 07-07-2004, 03:56 PM Thats a good question. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Hoot is a convert from a Duramax to a Cummins kinda guy. He posts here, and that is is screen name. He did a piece on installing the temperature probe in the "Do It Yourself" section.
Took alot of razzin' about the switch. But seems to be very knowledgable about Duramax stuff. People seem to like the article he did.
corona 07-14-2004, 04:51 PM IT IS DONE - IT HAS BEEN ORDERED!!
WOO HOOO!!!
IT IS DONE - IT HAS BEEN ORDERED!!
WOO HOOO!!!

Time slows to a CRAWL...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Might as well track down the stuff for the EGT probe install while you're at it. ATS mount? Wait for a Trippin?
So many questions, so much TIME.
Congrats, you'll love it. Just make sure you give the Ally time to learn. They don't like large power changes...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
Some here have suggested starting on the lower levels and working your way up when the Ally learns each one. That's what I did and it worked pretty well. Once you get it where you want it, leave it, 'cause everytime you change, the Ally will balk a little.
corona 07-14-2004, 09:53 PM The guy at Lowe's said that the 1/4" - 20 is the same as the 1/4" NPT. Is that right? I couldn't find any reference to the 1/4" NPT anywhere.
Zip from Tenn 07-14-2004, 10:04 PM No. The Lowe's guy is totally wrong.
1/4"npt thread is a pipe thread and it takes a 7/16" tap drill, which measures .437"
1/4"-20 nc (national coarse) thread is a machine thread and it takes a #7 tap drill, which measures .201"
For your pyrometer, you need to drill for either 1/4" npt or 1/8"npt, whichever size fitting is supplied with the pyro kit you purchase.
By the way, if you need to drill and tap for the 1/8" npt thread, you will drill a 21/64" hole.
Rather than drill the final size hole first, most folks increment their way up to the final size hole by starting with a small drill (1/8"). This is to end up with a more accurate final hole. It's easy. Good luck.Edited by: Zip from Tenn
corona 07-14-2004, 10:55 PM Dammit - I thought it looked too small compared to the pics in the HOOT Method DIY.
Oh, BTW, this is kinda neat - http://www.engineersedge.com/tap_drill_chart.htm
Any ideas on where to find the proper quality tool I'll need?
Max Owner 07-14-2004, 11:24 PM Not Walmart.... Certainly get a good quality set of taps (1/8, 1/4) They should come in a set of three (starter, intermediate, and bottoming taps) In theory all you will need is the starter tap. Getting it started straight will take some patience. Then clearing the metal chips from the threads (turn in slightly, then turn out a turn or two, keep repeating) For a drill bit, any semi sharp bit should do. Titanium are the strongest, but overkill for the manifold.
Max Owner 07-14-2004, 11:26 PM Should be some industrial supply places to get a good quality package of taps (set of three) unless you want a whole set.
Max Power 07-14-2004, 11:48 PM I bought a snap on. Wasn't very expensive at all. Seems to be really good quality.
Matador 07-15-2004, 12:54 AM I bought mine at Sears...worked like a charm.
baimpala 07-15-2004, 08:40 AM I bought mine at Home Depot for ONE DOLLAR. It worked great. It was an off-brand high carbon steel tap, and worked just fine in the manifold. If I never use it again, I got my money's worth out of it.
Dennis
Any good industrial supply store, I think most Sears stores, local NAPA type auto parts stores, should have a single tap if that's all you want. As for the one dollar version, depends on how confident you are about your skills. One of the members broke a tap in an exhaust manifold and through a series of mis-adventures, wound up with a $5500.00 engine rebuild experience.
The drill bit is a bit tougher to find if you want an "R", the 21/64ths will be a little easier to locate. I wouldn't use the 5/16ths Edge includes with the kit, it's a bit tight. Make sure you've got clearance to turn the tap with whatever tool you plan on using. I wound up using a square drive socket on a ratchet, but it's real easy to get the thing started crooked that way. So be careful if that's what you decide to use.
Toughest part is getting started drilling holes in your $40,000.00 truck...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
baimpala 07-15-2004, 12:29 PM I was very careful when I started tapping the hole. I also used an 8-pt socket that fit pretty snug on the tap, and it worked like a champ. I didn't hog on the tap, either. I took it nice and slow. Probably took me five minutes to tap it far enough to install the fitting where I wanted it.
When I started tapping it, I started the tap into the drilled hole by hand, keeping it nice and straight and when I met enough resistance by hand, I put the ratchet on it and VERY slowly started cutting.
Best dollar I ever spent.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

corona 07-26-2004, 07:19 PM Well - it's here! Installed it today at lunch - what a snap (literally!)
Installing the Pyro probe tonight. Hoot's method will be used. Can't wait!!

corona 07-26-2004, 11:11 PM Ok
So many props to Hoot and all the others who have posted. Pyro probe went pretty slick. Just took my time, did it slow, and all was well.
EDGE is great. Played around in level 3 for a bit, but will be leaving it in 2 for the long haul. Can't afford the Suncoast yet, so, I'm not going to temp anything over level 2.
My mother-in-law's boyfriend helped with the install. Took about an hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes.
So - for those hesitating the install - JUST DO IT. Follow the advice here, take yer time, and you can do it.
