In need of finding out as much info as I can about these years of Ford's Diesel....
How were the '88-'94 diesels and how do the '88 - 94 diesels compare to the new PSD's?
How do the 95 - 99 psd's compare to the newer psd's?
Does anyone know, or have a link to somewhere that I can find out the HP and TQ#'s for the above listed years?
Thanks!

Up to some time in '92-93 the 7.3 IDI was NA (no turbo). I think the HP was around 170.

Then in '93/94 they came with a factory turbo, HP was around 200.

Sometime in '94 the PSD was introduced, which is a direct injection engine. The HP was 210-220. I think in '96 it became 230-235.

In '99, an intercooler was added. The bodystyle was also changed, the engine sits further back, to make room for a stack of intercooler, transmission cooler, A/C condenser and mammoth radiator. The HP was around 275-280.

In '02 the engine was downsized to 6.0 liter and the HP actually went UP to around 310.

I have heard nothing but good about both the older and newer 7.3 liter engines. I have heard of some people with problems with the 6.0 liter PSD.

I just bought one of the older IDI 7.3 turbo diesels myself, it has 180k miles on it and runs fine. The HP difference '88 - '96 is not a whole lot as long as you have the turbo. The turbo's can be added to the older engines. The '99 and up with the intercoolers are definitely a step up from the older ones though.

One thing to consider is that many replacement parts for the powerstrokes are an order of magnitude more expensive than the 7.3 IDI.

An important change is during the 1989 model year when the E4OD transmission replaced the C6. I highly recommend getting a truck with E4OD transmission. The C6 is very heavy duty but it is a 3-speed and freeway driving will not be very comfortable (neither for you or the engine).

Good luck.. I found all my info also from browsing through forums and calling around. Everybody knows something, and at some point the pieces come together.

Thanks again! I'm looking at picking up one of the big 3's used diesels and for what all i'm wanting, the PSD is looking good.

I wouldn't be scared of the 7.3's. I would stay away from the 6.0's though. There are a few good one out there but it seems that there are a Sh**load of bad ones.
