GMC 2500HD 8.1 L with Allison

Dealer says PRNDL switch is out and extended "MAPS" warranty won't cover it. $378

Warranty policy says it will cover a Electronic Shift Control Unit

Just curious if there may be a semantics play here or are they separate parts?

The problem started the other morning when I got a non response in all gears. Dealer says PSI is good on all gears no metal shavings and they ran it through all the troubleshooting. Code tells them them this it what it is (PRNDL) the tech manager told me a "pendal" (sp?](this may or may not be correct)switch.

5 speed in a 2001 GMC Sierra 2500HD 8.1

$378 sound correct?

Does all this sound correct?

Any info appreciated

Edit: Afterthoughts:

The truck sit for a week

I had to push the truck out of the driveway (no reverse) and then drive it around the block, goosing it to get it going (acted like it was in 3rd or fourth gear), smelled hot when I got it back home. Limp?

Also read somewhere here regarding "torque converter bleed down" (sitting for a week)

The next day it was working fine (all gears) , drove around block and smelled a little hot when got home

Had it towed to the dealer

After reading the threads regarding the NSBU, I'm now wondering if this is the same issue and they are trying to disguise it as the PRNDL (semantics?)

8.1 gas engine GM Labor Time Guide for Warranty, section? K5228e?

Should I throw this at them?

Should have them show me what code they pulled up?

Thoughts appreciated

I'm guessing they told you "prindle switch (PRNDL, like the gear display).
They are also called Neutral safety switches, gear range switches, etc.

Thanks,

I guess my question now because I'm going to try to argue this under warranty if possible. Is it a part within the ESCU or something of that nature which should be covered in a warranty situation?

And does anyone think $378 sounds right incase I don't win my argument? LOL

Any thoughts appreciated

on the d/max engines, this switch is covered under the emission warranty. I'm not sure on the gas engine. I'm not sure where you are located, but if you can get to an Allison dealer, you can purchase the switch for about $50. Its not that hard to install. GM likes to get as deep in your pocket as they can. I should know, I work for a dealer and the price of parts seems like they are going up weekly. Hope this helps.

Are you saying that this is the same as the NSBU switch that I've been reading about? I sure wish I knew if the GM Labor Time Guide for Warranty K5228e is the same for the gasoline engines?

I need a plan of attack

Yes, labor codes are the same no matter what vehicle.
The emissions coverage is different IIRC, call customer assistance with that labor code and see what they say.

Thanks, I just laid this on the service manager via voice mail, asked him to research it and see what he comes up with. My first dealing with him, as stated in my original post already makes me wonder that he might be trying to pull a fast one here as he told me it was a "PENDAL" Switch. He even spelled it that way to me! LOL I think he knows and is trying to BS me.

I think my ammo, if needed will be this: I can get the part for $60 - $90 and do the work myself and then file for re-imbursement with customer satisfaction dept. I know the EPA has a compliance dept I can file as well.

Maybe THAT will get him off dead center

thanks,

I'll let you know what happens

My only fear :

I think the gas engine is 60 / 50k and I'm right at 60 / 44k

Update....good news!!

Service manager returned my call. Said he did the research and was "surprised to find that , YES, it is covered under the emissions warranty" Said it is a 8yr/ 80k warranty. (8.1 Vortec in Oklahoma) I'm a happy camper other than the bad taste left in my mouth as to whether or not I was targeted for being screwed over.

Thanks to this site and all who helped! My donation will be in the mail ASAP!
