I dont do a lot of towing.....less then 2k miles a year and its a car trailer with 4-5 quads on it. Is a temp guage really necessary???? Or is it just personal preference?

Absolutely necessary. Any malfunction in the trans causes heat. Sometimes you are not aware there is a malfunction but the temp gauge will let you know. I can't see the General putting in something unecessary for free.

I'm not convinced it is doing me any good anyway. On my truck it has never gone over 210* and yet my trans fluid came out burned as black as used diesel oil. That temp shouldn't be nearly enough to burn the fluid, so, is the gauge accurate enough to be of any help?
