: Rear View Camera..where to mount??

I have been trying to install this rear view camera system for 3 days now (working a few hours a day) I got the LCD mounted in the center console:
http://www.sandbros.com/mikesride/chevy/dmax/rearview_cam/rearview_lcd.jpg

Finally got the cable ran to the back of the truck and now can't find a good place to mount this camera except under the rear bumper.
The main reason for this camera is to hook up to a trailer easy so I need to be able to see the hitch.

I have 2 camera's. I want to use the white one on this page because it has sound and can see in total darkness:

http://www.rearviewcameras.com/coduvo6cosy.html

The other one I have is the flush mount (towards the bottom of that page) which I was going to put in the front somewhere.

Do you think the white camera will be safe under the rear bumper?
I'm more concerned with me dragging the rear bump (which no trail connected) in the rocks and ripping it off.

The only other place would be to either mount it in the tailgate handle area somewhere or behind the licence plate and cut a hole in it (is that legal?)

I also need to change the color of the housing to a darker color so it is not seen as easy. I was thinking using black decals?

Thanks for any suggestions!

IRC you can cut a small hole in the center of your plate and mount it there. You should not have any issues with that. I use to have my air lines for airbags mounted in my plate, never had any issues with the law...

The hole would need to be 2-3" wide and 1" tall for the white camera in the link. It would be in the upper portion of the plate.

Why not use the flush mount camera in the bumper. Is sound really that important, all you will hear is your motor.

Your right. I just wanted to use the better camera.

That one also can see in total darkness.

Mike,

I just noticed that you live in San Diego, so do I. What part of SD do you live in?

That's a prefect mounting location however I already have this camera.

I will figure it out :)

Mike,

Nice LCD mounting location. That was 1 of 3 I considered but finally decided on an OEM looking system that will attach to the sunvisor.

I just purchased a system that comes with a "keyhole" sized flushmount camera that fits right above the trailer hitch, it's disguised in a black panel. I also ordered a second camera, also keyhole sized with angle ring(s) to use for the 2nd video input.

So what location(s) did you finally decide on, and do you have picts you can share?

I got one of those same camera's you have but wanted to use the better of the 2 I had. This one has a wider view and can be used in zero light (not that I must have that). I mounted it on the right side under the rear bumper on the fender support.

This is the view on the LCD (that is a motorcycle stand in the pic)

Nice, I'm going to have to look into that one eventually. It appears you were able to mount it far enough under the bumper that it's not obvious to someone walking by the truck too.

Here's the one that comes with the system I ordered, but once I install a hitchball, the view will be diminished. Going to have to play with this setup a bit. Thanks a million for posting the info and the pict. Nice job.

The LCD display to match interior headliner, attaches to sunvisor mounting screw on either side of console/mirror.

Keith,

Where did you purchase your hitch camera setup?

It's on order and I should have it next week some time. When I receive the system, I'm planning to take pictures and post information here on how well the install goes. I purchased it from http://www.electronics-pluz.com/vihisibamosy.html The owner's name is Brian and he accepted credit card payment via PayPal, very easy, nice guy.

I'll post a follow up here with a link to my installation thread for anyone who's interested.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I lost this thread

I live off of Governor Drive - you are probably about a mile from me.

Yep not far at all. I live right off the 805 and Clairmont Mesa.

I pass Governor everyday on my way to work.

The system I ordered on Monday, arrived today. That exceeded my expectation, came out of Florida via UPS Ground. I was able to do most of the install in about 2.5 hours, taking my time and double checking things. Should have it completely installed by tomorrow night if I can find some time. Took tons of picts and will post a "how to" in case anyone is interested.

There are only 2 disappointments. The camera cable isn't very long, definitely will NOT work with a long bed, and my factory hitch has a welded plate where the camera mechanism was supposed to mount. Had to adapt the installation a little.

EDIT: The How To and comments are located here:
http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12273&PN=1

Vizualogic never replied to my questions, so not sure what to tell anyone with a longbed other than to ensure you get a GM kit with an extension cable. The standard kit camera cable will not be long enough. You'll also have to move the camera off to the side somewhere if you have a factory hitch like mine, with a welded plate in the middle. See the How To thread link above for more info.

My apologies to Mike, I didn't mean to hijack his thread. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif Edited by: Keith
