Bought My LBZ in Aug. I have checked the Fuel mileage on every tank,(hand calculated.) For the first 2000 miles the DIC would jump around for the whole tank and be about 2mpg lower than the hand calculated #s. The last three or four tanks, the DIC setteles down afterabout 1/4 tank and is closer to hand calculated numbers. is this normal? The lowest hand calculated mpg was 16.8
the best was 19.6 mpg.

The last three tanks the mileage has droped to 14 to 15 mpg. Same road and speed. I bought the fuel from a different station. maybe winter fuel or ULSD is to blame. What do you Guys think?

Love the truck, no problems at 3500 miles. Can't wait till its broke in.
Thanks

My MPGs haven't dropped any since my fuel supplier started delivering ULSD a few weeks ago, so I don't think that's the problem. It could be winter fuel, though. Where are you located? They usually start delivering winter blend fuel around here about the middle of November, so we're getting close to it.

Might just be bad fuel from that station, though.

My mileage dropped when I started filling up with ULSD by about 2.5-3 mpg.

No change in mpg with ULSD. The only change in mpg comes from the weight of my right foot.

X2 that and winter fuel

On my third tank with ULSD mileage dropped 1.5 - 2.5

Winter fuel and colder weather.

Man, I thought buying the new diesel last week would only mean making sure I don't put gas in it. As I'm reading more and more on the Duramax (and diesels in general) there are different types of fuel for summer and winter? Is one brand/vendor better or more reliable than another? This is my first post. Been on the RV.net and Northwoods owner group pretty regularly but now with the diesel I think I'll be using this site a lot also. Thanks for any replies.

It's probably a combination of ULSD and winter blend.

Is there any valid theory behind why ULSD should give worse mileage (lower BTU's, etc)?

yes there is a diffrence.
#1 you dont want to run 100%, it runs too hot in your motor
- #1 runs well in heaters and other equipment
#2 is what we usually run in the summer. its good stuff
- they mix a little #1 into the #2 for winter fuel, causes the fuel not to gel as easy in the winter.
- there is also a #2 premium that i try to run in the summer. its more refined, has more power and ive only seen it at cenex
- there is also bio diesel, ok to run it in the summer but you have to watch the % ran in the winter because it gels easy.

hope this helps

i have not had the chance to run the new ULSD. i dont see why it would cause lower MPG? it has a higher CT rating which makes more power, thats all i know

I think winter grade fuel sucks. Mileage drops. I never use additives untill winter grade comes out and temps start dropping.

The ULSD is not all the same such as LSD fuels are not all the same.

Some fuel now may have #1 mixed if it's LSD or ULSD because of winter blend.
This will lower the energy per gallon.

Also some ULSD is made with #1 to start with.

Being ULSD alone would not change the energy more than about 1-2%

Maybe 5% loss of energy because of #1 diesel.

Loss of energy usually means more foot on the pedal which makes for even worse mpg.

Use some additive, it should work better than ever now.

During these times you will be getting substandard ULSD that is labeled as LSD because it could not make the grade which may not actually be as good as LSD.

Down the road we should see better fuel when all ULSD is made from #2 and contamination is reduced.

The new stanadyne performance formula has been upgraded for the new diesel and will more than pay for itself year around in mpg achieved.

ULSD has lower BTU's which is less efficient for the same reason #1 premium diesel is less efficient. Higher cetane does not = more power. I have a power and BTU grid on all levels of diesel, kerosene, and jet grade fuel but I can't copy and paste it from the format. I will try to get it in another format so I can post for you all.

That would be great. I would like to see the differences in the various fuels. I think that they have started using winter fuel up here, because I think my mileage has dropped. Have not hand calculated it yet, but I can't go as long on a tank back and forth to work as I could in the summer.

I can't get it to copy and paste. If anyone wants the information, I can email you the file. It's in a MS Power Point format.

Most of the reason #1 gives worse mileage than #2 is that there is no wax in kero. so it has less energy but it also doesn't gel near as easily.

My duramax van went from average 20 mpg to average 16 on ulsd
my ford and 2 dodge diesels also lost 2 or 3 mpg on the ulsd.
