: Ally flush...what a disaster!!!

Well, I decided to do a flush and put on the deep pan. Everything was going sooo good until I started to torque the bolts on the pan. Got to the 3rd or 4th one and my torque wrench just never clicked!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif I backed out the bolt and metal filings fell all over. The casing was stripped!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif I was so careful putting that pan on too!! Nothing was cross threated and I know I didn't over tighten.....it must have either been over tightened from the factory or just defective!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Well, thank god for heli-coil kits!! I tapped it, put in a heli-coil and problem solved. From there on the rest of the flush went good!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I followed all the instructions from the Hoot method. But the whole ordeal took me about 3 1/2 hrs!!!

Also I used every bit of that 5 gal. pale of Transynd! After flushing the second gal through, I ran it through the gears, brought the level up in the middle of the cold mark, then took it for a ride, got it up to temp., and topped it off right at the bottom for the hot mark.

Hopefully, I'm good to go now for 20K miles!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

"Hopefully, I'm good to go now for 20K miles!!"

I thought with Transynd we could go 50,000 miles between
changes ??

I believe with Transynd or quality full synthetic we're good for 75k or better. Of course, non of us will leave it in that long as we will change it sooner just for an excuse to tinker on the truck... Come on now, admit it, all of you..http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

I'm always looking for a reason to "tinker" on the ol' girl! What is it about a Duramax?! I wasn't anything like this with my last gasser pick-up. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Must be the diesel fumes. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

Heck, I am having a hard time leaving the engine oil in... I want to use that new Fumoto valve I installed!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

Will be around 25k when we get back from vacation, and will probably be looking for a reason to service the tranny and convince myself the Tran-Synd needs changing with only 20k on it...I know I didn't give my 01 8.1L this much attention, and I swore I was gonna keep that thing for a long time!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

I torqued the pan bolts to 20 ft lbs just like Hoot's instructions say! I'm telling you it had to be a defective tap or something because I screwed in every bolt hand tight then torqued them ever so gently until they were torqued. I didn't even put much presure on that bolt and it stripped right out!!

Yeah, everyone is always telling me to stop screwing with that truck but I can't help it!! I just turned 5K miles and I'm on my 2nd oil change, 1st tranny flush, changed the diffs & transfer case fluids.....and now I'm wondering what I can do next????http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

If it wasn't for that damn pan bolt, the flush would have gone easy!! I think I'll probably flush it every 25K miles. Why not, it can't hurt! Anyways, I have a whole box of helicoils now so what else can go wrong for me?!?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

I'm planning on changing the spin on filter every oil change too, just because it's so easy to do!!

My next thing is to get a fumoto valve for the motor! Man I busted my knuckle good lossening that drain plug!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif<-- That's the coolest thing!! Says it all!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

20 ft lbs???!!!

Boy I think thats way too much, I'll have to check my service manual.. I would guess something like 10 ft lbs would be more like it. Theres not much meat in the trans casing there..

20 ft lbs does seem excessive. As far as the oil goes I usually drain the pan (only) at every engine oil change and spin on a new filter every 25K. Heck you're under there anyway and it's not much trouble with the plug in the drain pan. All I need now is a transmission Fomoto valve. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I run plain ole DEX III as I always tend to stay at or below the 190 degree area.

I do my pan tightening by feel not tq. I have been doing this stuff for 40 years and have a feel for it. !8ft lb's max on a good casting with good threads. !0 to 15 ft lb's usually suffice.
