I was signed up wit K&N to receive info on new releases for LBZ parts, and got an email showing me their new release for a drop in filter for the LBZ.

(I forgot I was even on the list, and bought an AirAid setup for my 2500 several months ago anyways)

Might get this for my 3500 though.

do you not like your AIRAID? If so why not? I heard that AIRAID filters are supposed to filter better than k&n.....

I'm not replacing the AIRAID...I have 2 light duties, plus a 5500 series truck. I just don't need to put airaid kits in my "other trucks" that are being driven by employees. I haven't driven the 3500 since it had 5000 miles. It now is pushing 45000. :) He can have a K&N drop in.

I have a AIRAID CAI and their filters are made by K&N, I have since replaced it with a S&B filter.

2006LBZ,

AFE has had the drop in filter for approx 3-4 months now and it is available in the standard 5 layer or the Pro Guard 7 too! Best protection of any of the washable filters etc. AFE doe sit differently, each layer is a slightly smaller diameter hole and the layers are not stacked so all the holes align and form a tunnell!! They cross stack them so the air has to turn and between the decreasing size holes and the turning of the air they stop a ton more dirt. And the price isn't much more either considering! If you have any questions on them just call.

towdog333,

If you have any information verifying that K&N makes the Airaid filter please let me know. My information is that Airaid makes their own filter in their onw manufacturing plant???

I have an afe drop in. In my opinion a STUPID design, with just the two prongs that hold it. If the filter rotates after its installed it falls out...NOT GOOD. The K&N design is much better, but the filtering quality of K&N stinks!! Anyone want an AFE drop in(cheap!!), drop me a PM.

The filter just has no support. If it happens to rotate it just falls out. Mine did, so I am back to stock.

the air filter on the 06/07 intake is made by donaldson-it has a cenrifugal cyclone built in-the filtering capability of this filter is the best-which is why the aftermarket systems are having such trouble making any power claims-the earlier systems like the lly/lb7 ones arent as efficient so an aftermarket system has an easier time of doing a better job

And now that fleetfilter has them for $30 instead of $60++ from the dealer why change. Better filtration and good air flow, I guess stock is the way to go.

I don't know if I have my old receipts and the info that came with the original package but will try and find it, but I do remember it said the filter was made by K&N

Only thing I can say is they must have started making their own after all the complaints about K&N cause I know the one I bought AIRAID that is the filter said it was a K&N

I'm sure this is the same reason why K&N brags that their filters flow air better, if they have less filtering restriction. To each their own. I'm sure the difference in filtration and how it affects the engine is so minimal you would barely notice.

It also does not specify which competitor they are comparing their product against.
You are assuming it is K&N, however they could have picked any "cheap" competitor to make
this comparison against and we wouldn't know.

(Don't get me wrong, I love my Airaid kit... I just don't need a [$200+] full cold air intake for every truck. Thats why I like this new K&N drop in. If I can get my hands on one now, I'd be real happy)

Summit Racing shows $57.69 for it, K&N website says $67. Not available for shipment from Summit until 11-15-06. Yikes! Time to call my buddy @ Autozone and see if they can get it sooner.

haulin-rv,

We have sold a LOT and I mean a lot of these and not had any issues at all?? I will forward your post to AFE and see what they have to say about it. Call them at 877-512-8111 and ask for Eric sometime after noon today, that will give him time to get the e mail etc!!

So you can't use the K&N filter on the new LBZ engine? Are the filtering housings different from the LLY? I was thinking I could just pull the one from my LLY and put the stock back on and use it on my 07 LBZ engine....

You will have to get one like I posted at the beginning of the thread. They have changed. They just recently released this LBZ drop in filter.

I've been here a few months now, just doing alot of research. Great info, keep it up. Anyway, I've been looking into the CAI avaiable for the LBZ...Volant, AEM, Banks. There dosen't seem to be much of a difference in the air tube designs (between the filter box and the turbo) to these kits in comparison to the OEM tube. As a matter of fact, they all use the OEM tube off the turbo. So, my question is, "Is the filter box and filter for any of these kits, worth the roughly $300, or would it be just as good to get one of the filters mentioned in this thread?"

I was considering one, but I wasn't sure if it is the same as stock or if it is a paper style that fits the stock air box.

I have the proguard 7 AFE drop in filter and have not had any issues. I did have one question though. After cleaning the filter it has to be re oiled is there any difference between the K&N oil and the oil that AFE sells. Just wondering if it would work since I have a can of K&N spray oil sitting on the shelf.

I sure don't see what the difference could be. Considering that the K&N recharge kits are all you'll find out anywhere. I oil my Airaid with K&N oil every time, works great.

Did you guys not see the air filter test results posted here a while back? The super duper AFE wasn't availabale then so it may have fared better. However, the K&N and AMSOIL flowed only a little better (like 5%) than a factory AC Delco paper filter when they were first installed. However, both the K&N and AMSOIL plugged up in around 20 minutes where the Delco took 65 minutes to plug up. Further, the Delco did a much better job of filtering.

Further, the chip and programmmer companies did not find any difference on the dyno regardless of what intake was used (they even tried it with no air filter at all) up to around 450 RWHP. Many of us were pissed, because we had spent money on aftermarket air filter systems.

I would need to see an independent test for the AFE before I would consider it. Until then, a stock paper filter with a TX Christopher Cold Air Intake kit is the way to go. There is no question that combo keeps the dirt out of the engine and flows well enough to make more HP than most are interested in making.

afp1,

Chek the test again the AFE PG7 was there and fared very very well in fact. We suppllied it for testing in fact, if memory serves it was the best performing washable filter in the test and was close to the AC Delco performance too!.

My impressions are that the filters alone don't create enough power difference to be worth the expense. I bought the AFE drop in for its reusability not for a a powergain. The paper filters really aren't cheaper if you figure ih the cost of replacements overtime compared to one thats washable.

Mark,

To me, it doesn't look like the AFE & did all that well. However, has anyone tested the new AFE?

Here is the test:

So the way I read this the K&N actually lets more dirt through and has more restriction than a stock filter as well as the other aftermarket filters.

Then why not go with the EBAY cold air kit for $75, then add the filter of your choice. That's what I just did. It comes with a carbon fiber coated aluminum pipe, air box, and filter. I replaced the filter with a S&B power stack, then put a filter sock over it from Outerwears. Total investment: $150
