I had the darndest thing happen. The other night it was idling for about 15 minutes after driving to a friends. It started to idle really slow. After about 5 seconds of slow idle (300rpm or so) it went back to normal. It was a funny sounding idle, maybe missing, I don't know. Any ways I took off for home (50 miles away) and it never warmed up past 160 or 170. It has forever stayed on 190 to 195. It had good power. Earlier that day I had noticed it was wanting to smoke alot on light acceleration and then clearing up. Any ideas? Thanks for a great site!!!

I had some similar symptoms on mine just before the pmd quit. It would start but idle slow and sound different then stall. Plugged in a new pmd and everything went to normal. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

A short in a tempature sensor will make it idle funny and smoke, but unless it's the coolant sensor,
I would replace the thermastat, as it should have opened/run at 190 deg.

The coolant sensor might be fried, scantool could clear that up by showing you actual sensor readings.

I ran it again today. No smoke and ran @ 195

I had some minor smoking problems and running weak. The code set was low coolant temp. or something. (no idle issues were noted) I discovered one of my t-stats wasn't shutting all the way. Replaced them both and problem was solved.
