Whats a really cheap easy way to make your turbo whistle more. My 94 has a big crossover, 3in downpipe to 3.5 back, to a 4 in tip. No cat, no muffler. It will run good boost since its a 5 sp. manual, ive had it up to 14 psi before. It doesnt whistle much except wen it spools down.I have no egr, this is an F engine.I cant hear it whistle taking off even with the windows down.Any ideas?

you cant cut the air filter box open, helps alot.

little more: ic makes it whistle like crazy

or the redneck way: take a file a cut a small groove on two opposite fins, same size:badidea:

first you need to see if you need to gut the upper intake. some "f" engines had the webbing and some didnt

I took the little baffle out of mine but didn't take the snorkel out yet, put 3" straight exhaust from the stock DP, dropping the muffler and cat with a turn down under the bed near the front of the pass side tire.. It sounds awesome.

About 600 miles into my trip last week (i had just gotten the truck) the turbo magically started working really well and you could hear it really good... Still not that sharp whistle like our Dmax with stock intake.. but i'm sure everyone knows my truck is turbo..

Does it help alot just putting a cone filter right off the side and dropping the air box? I am planning on figuring out what size the turbo inlet is and where i want my filter and ordering some silicone elbows etc from the guys i used when i built my S10 a2a etc. www.siliconeintakes.com they are the cheapest period..well i have a reseller account with them and get some off but regaurdless its cheap and high quality parts.

Try this, I did it and love it. Follow the link in the last post for pictures of what other people did.

As Turbo Chevy said, take off the black, plastic baffle. In everything I have done, that absolutley made the most difference. I'm not saying that it's going to sound like a Kenworth now, but it does make a very noticable difference.

Dennis, what baffle are you guys talking about?

I think they're referring to the piece of the filter housing that snaps into the fender and connects the fender to the filter box.

the L shaped tube lookin thing that goes from ur intake ( directly infront of your turbo, then it curves toward the middle of the engine. Plug it with a 45mm frost plug

It's a 94. They don't have the turbo mufflers. ;)

...My 94 has a big crossover

um just how "big" of a crossover? This could be your issue...

do you have any kind of boost fooler and what about the intake side? Mine screams pretty damn loud at 10psi with OEM exhaust....well save the DP and crossover....

$25 at auto zone for a cone filter and it does whistle like a Kenworth:ro) Or Peterbuilt for that matter.):h

If they don't have a turbo silencer (baffle), what do they have instead? I have never looked at a '94, but isn't there something there that quiets the turbo down? From what I understand, the main reason for the silencer is so people don't hear the "turbo bark" when you let off the throttle. GM's thoughts, I assume, are that they don't want people to hear that 'cause then the dealers would be getting lots of phone calls from people saying that their engine makes a funny noise.

But, as also stated above, putting on a high-flow intake that is out in the open in the engine bay will also make a difference. When I got rid of my plastic air filter box, I did not notice any difference in EGT's during the summer. I use a measured 1.1 mile hill on a local highway for my test ground.:)

An SS diesel intake sure made mine whistle.

Dennis, I don't think there is ANY kind of silencer on a 94' or 95'.

With my new cone filter i hear a very noticeable "whhoooshhhh" sound when letting off the throttle quickly or whenever it shifts into overdrive and the boost falls quickly. Anyone else hear this?? Turbo bark? Its not a griding or banging noise, just a breath of air rushing sound.

Silvy, i hear exactly the same thing in same conditions, with my cone filter. May have a BOV (blow off valve) somewhere underhood ):h

I hear the same noises, plus a nice whistle on acceleration and while cruseing. I think the reason 94,95,and 96's don't have a turbo silencer has something to do with the $hitty square filter design. Not sure but makes sense.

Thanks, Silvy. I learn something new every day! :)

Yes, that whoosh sound is commonly referred to as Turbo Bark. It's heard through the air filter. With my '98 filter, I never heard it - even with a cone filter (leaving the filter inside of outside of the filter box didn't matter). It wasn't until I took off the turbo silencer, when I completely re-did my intake, that I heard it.

i read somewhere of a guy notching a fin on his compressor wheel so that it would scream. I would not try it. Waste a good turbo that way.

i was kidding about that. just a quick and easy but stupid way of getting whistle

sorry about the delayed reply. Thanks Dennis. What causes this "bark"? Is it the pressurized air in the upper intake plenum rushing back through the turbine compressor the opposite way when the exhaust force decreases on the exhaust turbine?

Is it bad for the turbo? It must be doing this all the time when we use our stock intakes (turbo silencer in newer engines included) but the sound is just muffled right? Or, does this not happen with stock intakes/filters/silencer due to some aerodynamic flow variation?

straight piped w/ a cone filter and the thing screams. before my ic i started building boost @ 900 rpms. now about 1200. she goes though. love opening her up on us27 cruising @ 70 passing psd, cummins & d/a. they don know what passed them.

I don't think you guys are hearing turbo bark. Turbo bark on the '06 PowerStroke I use at work sounds like something BAD is happening. If you load the converter and build boost then let off the throtle fast it barks.

It sounds exactly like the turbo spinning down or maybe reversing.

It has a whoosh sound to it and I think it's coming from the exhaust side not through the intake side.

The turbo bark I refer to sounds like something is going to come apart! It really sounds like a Dog's bark.
