: LBZ turbo problems Help!!
Wolford 10-17-2006, 11:00 PM I swapped out the turbos on my truck. Now when I crank it the vanes stay wide open and it makes no boost. It has thrown a few epa codes and the check engine light came on, but no turbo codes??
I am at a loss I double checked all of my connections to the turbo, but it still doesnt respond. My truck sounds like a Lb7 idling.
Update drove from shop to house and now the truck is missing and will barley idle.
All fuilds are good and Like I said there are no codes reported??
tlee05 10-17-2006, 11:13 PM Maybe a turbo vain position sensor?
Wolford 10-17-2006, 11:27 PM No cause I am stupid and left the cpu at the house.
Wolford 10-17-2006, 11:29 PM I drove about 4 miles with it acting like this. It was smokey to say the least. I am wondering if the motor that rotates the ring in the turbo is bad??
Bobo what should I log? I will go outside and idle it and log that if it will help?
Wolford 10-18-2006, 11:37 AM P0183 is the only code it is giving me.
Any ideas?
Kennedy 10-18-2006, 11:51 AM Check to be sure that you didn't ness anything up at the fuel temp sensor in the return line.
Wolford 10-18-2006, 12:12 PM Where is that located?? Would this cause my Turbo vanes to stay at 40% all the time?
Wolford 10-18-2006, 08:39 PM checked the Temp ,I think, (it was located near the glow plug module) sensor connection it was loose, clicked it in and there wasno change.
EFI says that my ecm is commanding 40% vane position what would cause this??
I also have a butt load of white smoke.
Trippin 10-18-2006, 09:13 PM Perhaps a Tech 2 and a Vane postion relearn cycle needs to be performed.

no motor, just a valve that opens and closes to let more/less oil pressure to the large piston in the turbo (round metal part sticking out of the center section), the piston moves in and out, moving a clocking ring, which opens and closes the vanes.
try what trippin said, and see what commanding the vanes manually to 0% and 100% witha Tech 2 does... Does it have the vacuum cleaner sound at idle like its supposed to? Are you running the LBZ vane positon sensor or the original LLY sensor? Vane pos sensor is the round thing with the white sheilded cable coming out of it that screws into the turbo center section. You must use the original LLY vane pos sensor, cant use the LBZ sensor IIRC...
talk to McRat...he was running an LBZ charger on Casper for a while.
Wolford 10-19-2006, 11:51 AM I figured the Motor deal out when I took the first one off (1.5 months ago). However the valve is electronic so it could be bad I guess but I doubt it. I am using the LLY pos sensor. I am worried that I might have broke the wire screwing it off, but if I did that would it not throw pos sensor codes?? The ecm desired vane position is 40% (this thing sounds badass idling), but this is with the stock tune and it should be running around 88%. The minimum it can command is 40 (Ithink) according to the stock tables. Driving around it will want up to 70% but never really gets above 52ish%.
jarrett 10-19-2006, 01:52 PM Have you done the vain position relearn?? Can you command 100% open/closed with the tech 2?
Wolford 10-19-2006, 02:11 PM I have no access to one. The dealers around here are stupid to. I had to inform them how to do a Fast learn on the Alli. I disconnected the batteries, as Brayden mentioned, but it didnt do a relearn as far as I could tell.
Wolford 10-19-2006, 04:06 PM Okay GM says there is a pre determined value that the vanes will go to if the ecm cannot complete the relearn. There are also certain criteria that have to be met before a relearn can be performed. I am currently trying to get the ecm to perform a relearn.
From GM "If the ECM does not have a previously learned value it will default to a stored value."
Does anyone know what the stored value is?? I am guessing it is 40% (hoping also)
DURAtotheMAX 10-19-2006, 04:17 PM did you modify the vane position sensor at all? IIRC McRat said he had to mess around with his a bit and grind something off...
Wolford 10-19-2006, 04:44 PM No I didnt mess with it. I trued searching for his thread with no luck.
Wolford 10-19-2006, 11:25 PM How much do I trim it? Or does it matter. You are right though the sensor bottems out on the little cam thing inside the charger locking down the vanes in one position. I just wonder if you can cut too much off of the sensor.
socaldieseltech 10-20-2006, 01:46 AM did you modify the vane position sensor at all? IIRC McRat said he had to mess around with his a bit and grind something off...
I was the one who messed around with it was the plastic electrical connector that needed a slight modification, not the sensor itself. Other than that it was a direct bolt-on replacement.
jarrett 10-20-2006, 02:34 AM No I didnt mess with it. I trued searching for his thread with no luck.I ran a LBZ turbo for awhile on my truck. I used the original sensor from the LLY turbo with no problems, but you must do the relearn prosses with the tech2. I don't see how it will ever work right if you don't do the relearn.
