: Which air intake??
Aaron1 10-17-2006, 09:41 AM Looking to upgrade my air intake in my 2001 chevy 6.6l duramax. Don't really know much about them and what to buy for an upgrade. I want to get something for down the road because in a few months I plan on getting bigger exhaust and adding a chip of some sort, so I figured a new air intake would be a good start, and then the exhaust. Anybody have an air intake you need to get rid of? thanks

with factory donaldson filter and clamps etc...
Cut some holes in the factory air box, get a good clean filter, and that's all you need. Unless you want to make your turbo louder, don't waste your $$$ on an intake. The factory intake works just as well. There was a very long article a few months back doing comparison's b/w factory and aftermarket, and the factory w/ ac delco airfilter was the best for catching dirt and performance. You can also look in the Diesel Power magazine last month I believe, and it will show you the same thing.
ratlover 10-17-2006, 11:02 AM I would stick with a stocker.....maybe swisscheese it like seen on wackywack.com. Stick with a stock paper filter. Those aftermarket filters dont offer much hp gain to $ spent. A waste on most trucks IMO
Aaron1 10-17-2006, 12:57 PM thanks for the input, I'll keep what I have. I do have a k and n filter in it, so your saying that pretty much is a waste of time also? It needs replaced that's why i'm wondering.

Wouldn't B***S say Different? What does the Ram Air add vs. Cuttin holes in the stock box?
Has any one ever dyno'd a Cut up stock Box?
ratlover 10-17-2006, 03:37 PM I doubt the swiss cheesing will help much or even show a dyno improvement but it cant hurt, you will get a wee bit more turbo noise and ITS FREE!
I tested back to back stock filter in factroy swisscheesed box to same box with no filter under 5 hp(did see a slight gain though).....this is in the range of the dyno's acuracy.
You will see a few HP from an intake especially at higher power levels but you can get enough power to limp a stock trans with just a tuner so whats the point? If you like a bit more noise maybe or the looks....but HP per dollar a aftermarket intake is useless to 99% of the guys out there.
And of course banks or any manufacturer are going to show you these great gains and how it will lower your temps and EGT's and speed spool up  Listen to marketing and magazines and go faster due to a lighter wallet ):h
BTW at the track on a 500HP truck I saw no difference in track times but on the dyno I saw 15 HP from a stage 2 intake compared to a stock swisscheesed box.

Is their any other way to increase the turbo wistle other than an after market air intake filter on a 07 dmax?
